My Dad, retired physician, saved a priest with the Heimlich during a golf tournament. The man choked on an apple while on the t-box.

I did the same for a girlfriend.

Also I saved one of my dogs, a puppy, from choking on a piece of a remote control car she destroyed (a spring). Saw she was in distress and swept her mouth/ throat. Thank God I was there for that!

I’ve had a few close calls, too.

My daughter has that hanging in the kitchen- she’s not used it, I think I’ll get me one too.

I have one hanging in mine as well as we have one in each vehicle and at the grandparents. Two little ones that put everything in their mouth

A lady I knew choked to death a few weeks ago in a restaurant.

I’ve only choked a few times, never close to death, and it was horrifying …. I have asthma and it’s that same helpless feeling; different but the same.

Dr Ochsner (Yes the founder of the hospital system) died from choking on his food at a restaurant. Went to the bathroom so as not to make a scene and never came out.

True story.

Ate a deer popper in November 2024 for LSU/BAMA game. Chewed most of it, but something stayed attached when I tried to swallow half of it. Choked me out, couldn’t barely talk or breathe. Dad had to do the Heimlich on me, popped many blood vessel in my eye and around my face. I was doomed, def the closest call I’ve had in life.

I’ve come close several times. I tend to bite pieces of steak too big. I had to self heimlich once and came close a couple more times where I was preparing to do so and it cleared.

You sure you don't have GERD? Steak can instantly trigger it and make it seem like you are choking.

I was in a cruise ship dining room and a man at the table next to me started choking.

He started to fall out of his chair and I kept him from hitting the floor. Dining room staff did nothing. Another passenger ran over to him, got him standing and got him Heimliched.

Ship medical staff took 5+ minutes to arrive on scene.

Man would be dead if not for that passenger.

I had a corn chip lodge in my throat once, and that was painful. I couldn't get it dislodged. Had to wait for it to dissolve itself enough to continue on its' journey.

Felt like it, but nothing like going into Anaphylactic shock after a wasp sting in August.

I don't know how close i was to dying but i started choking on a piece of roast beef when i was 14-15 and motioned to my parents but i guess they didn't understand. I stood up and started shoving fingers down my throat and cleared it. It was pretty scary.

Last year sitting at a restaurant on vacation. Went to swallow a piece of steak and it got lodged in my throat. Started trying to clear it with water and was in somewhat disbelief this was actually happening to me. The water started pouring out of my mouth and nose and I realized I could no longer breathe. Then I broke the number 1 rule, I left the table and went outside to try to hack it up. Never leave the table and go outside! I couldn’t get it up outside and was starting to panic thinking to myself, is this really how I’m going to go? By the grace of god, a bartender had watched the whole thing transpire. He had never given the heimlich but had watched videos. I felt him come up behind me a started thrusting me into the air. After about 15 seconds of that the meat popped up out of my throat. Scared the sh!t out of me because if everything hadn’t gone perfect, I’m laying dead outside that restaurant. Life is a game of inches. Chew your food well and familiarize yourself with the Heimlich maneuver. It saved my life. Needless to say, that bartender got a massive tip!

2 cases:

During my 3rd year of my residency while working in the Coronary Care Unit, the nurse called me into a patient's room for sudden severe shortness of breath. He had recently had a heart attrack. I noted that he was not able to speak and and was turning blue. He had a dinner plate in front of him. First thing that came to mind was a coronary event, but I am glad the old "cafe coronary" came quickly to mind. I performed a Heimlich and a big old wad of chicken came flying out and he quickly recovered. It was ludicrous that this MI patient was in CCU and about to die due to chicken.

We were at big family gathering. My son was 4 years old and somehow got a hold of uncut grape. He was tryiing to breath and talk. I fortunately was very close. Performed Hemilich and grape popped out to the floor.

In college i was between classes at my apartment by myself and ate a spoon full of peanut butter quickly to get some food in me and it got stuck in my throat. All i could think about was, this the most fat kid way to die. I breathed slowly for a few minutes with the small amount of space i had to breathe through and then did something stupid. Took a sip of water to try to get it down my throat. Then i couldn't breathe at all and went outside to find help but then the moment i took a couple steps the peanut butter went down my throat.

Did water push it down? Did it just finally just unlodge?....I don't know. But I definitely thought i was going to die for about 30 seconds there.

I choked a ton after my motorcycle accident...drank to fast or did not chew food well. I needed aide a few times till I relearned(remember I had to relearn everything like walking, eating, talking, etc).

It was not fun at all.

About 5 years ago I choked on Rotolo's Pizza at my house, which had some very well done pepperonis. My wife was about 8 months pregnant and managed to do the heimlich on me with the side of her hip. The food popped out almost immediately and just as quickly our dog gobbled it up off the floor.

My wife didn't see the dog eat it and was wondering if the food dislodged because she didn't see it anywhere. I was trying to catch my breath so I could explain that the dog ate the shite as soon as it hit the floor.

When I was choking I remained pretty calm and was attempting to just breath through my nose and felt like I could very slightly, but I couldn't talk so my wife picked up on it and jumped in. She's something else.

Will never eat Rotolos again.

Had my tonsils and adenoids taken out in my 30’s so it’s very easy for me to get choked. Got something lodged in my throat at my home one time and thought I wasn’t going to get it out. Was still able to breathe slightly and cough. Took me about five minutes or more but I finally managed to cough it up. Scary feeling for sure.

Not choking but when I was a teenager and went Kayaking for the first time, I went down some rapids I had no business going down.

I flipped over and the current sucked me down or something, All I know is I was being sucked up against a huge rock under water and couldn’t move.

I don’t know how but I was lifted or moved up very fast and above water. I was at the point of taking that last breath.

Sometimes I wonder if I really died and I’m in hell right now, which would mean you all are too…. You’re welcome…
