Looks like something is burning for sure on the webcam.

The smoky mountain rain does not seem to have much of an effect on the fire.

The wind here in Lexington tonight is insane. Trash cans everywhere on their side in my neighborhood since tomorrow is trash day. Stay safe down there Vols and baws.

It’s crazy here in NC as well. I’ve never experienced wind gusts like this here. It’s been a strange start to the year for weather.

One of my coworkers evacuated at 2 AM... that rain left Knoxville pretty wet, hopefully it did some good.

Mayor: Wears Valley fire about 5 percent contained, consists of about 3,700 acres

By 10 a.m. Thursday, authorities estimated the blaze amounted to about 3,700 acres, advancing to the north and east across the hilly terrain.

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — The Hatcher Mountain fire that swept across Wears Valley is about 5 percent contained and consists of about 3,700 acres, Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters said in an update Thursday morning.

Some 100-plus structures have been "affected," Waters said, including many that were completely destroyed.

quote:

Waters said flames came close to the city limits of Pigeon Forge but did not quite reach it, to the relief of many involved

quote:

The fire broke out about 11 a.m. in the Indigo Lane neighborhood off Hatcher Mountain Road in Wears Valley.

Residents told WBIR they noticed smoke that appeared to resemble a chimney fire in the area. Fueled by dry conditions on the ground, the blaze spread rapidly among homes and cabins on the thickly wooded hillsides up above Wears Valley Road.

My AirBnB host didn’t think this qualifies as a safety hazard and wants to deny a partial refund. The guy sent me a text late last night saying evacuate immediately due to approaching fire.

I guess AirBnB will figure it out for me, but I’m not sure how this wouldn’t qualify. The guy’s from New Jersey I think, so who knows.

The predicted rain didn't happen for some of us. I live 18 miles ne of Knoxville and thirty some miles north of Sevierville. My rain gauge showed a pitiful 0.03" this morning, and when the cats came back in for breakfast, their feet were dry.

Big billowing white clouds this morning with enough wind to disperse the soot in the air. Lots of small fires reported on TV.

Last night the wind passing over our fireplace chimney made really weird sounds.

Yea, in the dead of night with no other sounds going on in the house the winds were intense sounding. Definitely made the house creek.

They've expanded the evacuation zone again.

LINK

Scroll out to see relationships to Maryville, Gatlinburg and Knoxville.

That it now goes west to the Blount county line and north, over the crest of Chilhowee Mountain makes it bothersome.

Who puts trash out during a strong wind advisory???

It’s worth setting an alarm to wake up earlier so i wouldn’t have to pick up trash everywhere

Yeah, I put mine out this morning after the storm had passed.

Unfortunately it seems like the rain didn't do shite to this fire.

There's no predicting when they'll have it controlled. Follow our local TV stations (WBIR, WVLT, and WATE).

We are supposed to get a storm this coming Tuesday. Only after it comes through will it be known to have helped or hindered the situation.

Right now, our countryside is just beginning to be spring. Depends on which valley you're in, but your choice to see Redbuds or Dogwoods or all the mature hardwoods beginning to green up.

If Wears Valley doesn't work out for you, there are thousands of miles that are also magnificent at this time of year.

Should be a few days of rain between now and then, hopefully enough to knock this down.

I'm up in the Townsend area a bit, preferring it to the hustle of Gatlinburg. Good lord, it is beautiful up there. Really sad this is happening.

is a short video on Channel 10 Knoxville taken by a fireman of the conflagration last night with burning trees being blown apart by the wind and the embers flying through the air as if they were grains of sand at a windy day at the beach.

Sorry about the link, but that's the only version I could find and it really is something we need to remember if ever we think "I really don't need to evacuate".

Guy was even smart enough to shoot it landscape.

Not smart of them to still be there when they filmed that.

Hope they can get it under control.
