I worked in a machine shop in high school and there was a guy that made Bowie's out of old metal cutting saw blades. He would rough grind the profile then put them on a surface grinder (with a magnetic base), then sharpen. Nice blades.

A friend from college has a thriving knifemaking business. His name is Darrin Sanders. You can look him up on Facebook. I've often wondered where he gets the rare stuff for his knife handles.

If that doesn't work out for you get in touch with Darrin. He also makes sets of knives.

I will never do it myself, but I always imagined this to be true.

Enjoy.

Cut your finger already?

Big nope on that hobby for me. I'd obsess over that hobby until I ground a piece of knife blade shrapnel into my eye or belly.

Shaved a few knuckles. What's a hobby if you don't bleed a bit?

Got into it this winter for a warm garage hobby. This is my latest 1084 steel, ironwood scales, old school butcher knife. I use it for my BBQ competitions.

Dad went up to North Carolina for the weekend and stopped by the Smoky Mountain Knife Works and picked me up a few presents.

We're a gift giving family.

It's like Christmas Morning!
