07/04/1987 was the last time I had a drink. I wanted to show my children you could enjoy life and have fun while sober. Do not miss it one bit!

For those of you that were heavy daily drinkers, did you just stop cold turkey? I know that can be extremely dangerous, I'll go months without drinking then go on a bender for a week or two. Even that puts me in extreme withdrawal for a few days when I finally stop, I can't imagine what daily drinking for years then stopping feels like

Yep, haven’t anything to drink today but I’m finished with work in a couple of hours so my streak will be coming to an end shortly

I did and the withdrawal wasn't fun. I didn't have the DTs or anything like that, but the extreme lack of emotional control, irritability, insomnia and depression hit hard after 2 days and stuck around in one form or another for about 2 weeks. Then they came back in less and less frequent waves all the way through about 10 months.
Part of my decision not to enter a medical facility to detox was my home life situation, but if you're at all concerned, seek professional help. If I had begun to exhibit any of the more concerning signs, I had someone with me who knew what to look for and could get me where I needed to go. It's not something I would recommend going into without a plan in place.

I had to switch to beer. I love whisky too much and lose all self control. I can moderate my shite much better drinking beer.

I've always wondered what they actually do in a detox. Fluids? Valium? Or do they just monitor you while you go through withdrawal hell?

Holy shite. I thought I had it bad with downing a bottle of wine. I always had some guilt doing that

Nope. I couldn't do it, plus it was dangerous as hell if I could. I ended up going to Palmetto in Rayville for 90-something days and detoxed/got started on recovery there. The folks there were giving me meds for the withdrawals and I was still seeing and hearing shite. It was pretty rough.
