I’d say to learn is just learning how the pieces move, and not blundering. If you’re just beginning these are your issues and will cause you to lose a lot of games. Once you learn to not blatantly blunder you can pick up some tactics.
yeah. none of us will ever be the best anyway. just play and learn as you go. the elo system will match you vs equally good or shite players regardless.
the important thing is not repeating mistakes and at the end of the day its healthy brain exercise. you can't lose unless you beat yourself.

My late father was a world class player (FIDE master) that had a peak rating in the 2400s. His claim to fame is he beat Victor Ciocaltea, a fellow Romanian who beat Bobby Fischer in the Chess Olympiad.
Meanwhile, I was too stubborn to learn from him and never became even an average player. Part of me regrets that.

never too late to learn.
actually now might be a good time because as stated in this thread it is kinda trending. matches are easier to find now than ever and just learning you won't have any room to decline only improve.

Too late to learn from my father though unfortunately since he passed. He gave lessons to kids near the end of his life, but only really wanted to work with talented kids and not just teach the basics.

That’s awesome. It takes a lot of talent and dedication to get to 2400 in classical time control. Long ago I had a goal to get to that level, but it takes more time and patience than I had. I switched to blitz years ago and just play online. I peaked around 2240 on blitz, and have a few victories over IMs and one retired GM. But I cannot consistently play at that level.

Just picked the game up and been playing online. Getting my arse handed to me. Is the best way to learn just playing, or is there a better way?
You post on TD. Baw....your IQ is not high enough to play chess.
