It is somewhat of lubricant, but it also helps seal and glue the plug into the orifice. I always keep plenty of extra rubber cement because I'll use damn near an entire tube of it on 1 plug for good measure.

If it didnt want to go in then you need to, ahem... errr...work on your orifice reaming skills...

Everyone who doesn't believe you.

How many tire shops do you frequent? Which ones will patch a tire free of charge?

Used it many many times, my teenage boys even know how.

For example, I remember getting out of the car in the parking lot near CEBA in the 80's and I heard "ssssssss". Quickly located a roofing tack and plugged it while there was still air in the tire. I was a few mins late for class, but didn't have to change a flat afterwards.

Plugs and patches worked perfectly fine since the rubber tire was invented. Then all of a sudden plugs and patches quit working when Firestone lost that big class action tire lawsuit

Most Goodyear and Firestone shops I've talked to will. Easy way to earn a customer for like 5 minutes of work.

I have been using them for 30 years without a problem.

I got a large diameter bolt in my tire and it required 3 of those plugs to hold it. That was 16,000 miles ago.

They work great when used correctly.

Yes it does lubricate. I use PVC glue sometimes. If you push it in the puncture 1/2-5/8 inch is far enough. I usually leave about 3/8 inch out and trim with a razor knife. I keep all that shite plus an air compressor in my truck. Big timesaver specially after a hurricane when you get flats regularly.

the cement does help with lubrication, but it also helps seal up the hole around the plug

The problem with plugs is they are real hit or miss. There are plenty of stories of a plug lasting 20k miles and just as many that don't make it 500.
