They are owned by the Chinese now. Proceed with caution.
Why?

On our second SPA XC60, thinking about a S60 when our son goes to college.
They’re a great platform. At the 60 level some of the interior bits are a little plasticy, anything under there’s more. The 90 level is very nice.

Mixed. Are you above or below the mason Dixon line.
Great cold weather cars. Terrible hot weather cars.

Probably the most reliable car on the road. But it ain’t dropping any panties.
Perception based on the past. Consumer reports reliability by manufacturer:
But they are better than Jeep, Volkswagen, Mercedes, and Chrysler.

Also a dated perception, a lot of it based on Volvos 80s and 90s marketing. If you take into account active and passive safety you first don't buy a pickup or SUV/CUV nor a small car. The shorthand is to buy a Mercedes S-Class sedan if you want the overall safest vehicle. They tend to have safety features today that will be standard/mandated on all vehicles 10-15 years later.

Given the level of govt mandates, is this true anymore?

They’re incredibly reliable, comfortable and handle well. My only complaint is the boot isn’t wide enough for my golf clubs or I’d have one too.
My wife probably won’t ever drive anything else.

I drive a 2020 XC90. Less than 4 years and 45K miles but just had to replace the rear evaporator and compressor, which I’m told is common issue with them. Wasn’t super pumped about it.

Bought one out of college in the 80s…
Boxy.. safe.. and spent its life at the mechanics..finally dumped it when . the electrical harness plastic stuff just rotted away.. every time I took a hard left somewhere in the harness metal wires would touch chassis and car would shut down..
Never looked back at Volvo again

As true as it ever was. The government doesn't find solutions it mandates them once they see a need and see an ability to meet the need. Safety measures initially are often very expensive and only practical on very expensive cars. Case in point GM brought the first airbag to a domestic car (the Toronado) but consumers weren't interested in part due to the price compared to the price of the car. Mercedes, Porsche and Acura were able to get the ball rolling because they had cars at price points where those consumers felt more comfortable with the additional cost.

They are mid pack among all brands for reliability

The big trucks are solid. No frills but rarely have any mechanical issues, in my experience.

Volvo Cars is owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding (Geely Holding) of China.
Volvo Cars formed part of the Swedish Volvo Group until 1999, when the company was bought by Ford Motor Company.
In 2010, Volvo Cars was acquired by Geely Holding.

They were.
German cars are the best-engineered, and safest.
American cars are next.
I don't GAF about the rest, no offense
