Our first house was in Magnolia Woods. We loved it, but outgrew the house. Big lots, mature trees, good mix of old and young couples.

That and fairhill are both in the budget. Newer homes and low crime minus the occasional car break in.

Makes me feel old. That was a good neighborhood when I left Baton Rouge.

I dont think that is high enough for a nice updated place in Southdowns or Capital Heights. That will get you a fixer upper
That is plenty to get a good house in Capital Heights

trash builders, homes falling apart in just over 10 years

Price range of $250-300,000
Most anything in that price range in south Baton Rouge is decent.
Just find something close to work that's also South of Florida. Houses in the crappy neighborhood don't generally price out at over $250,000.

here is your answer: Beauregard
LINK
$265,000 2bd/2ba 1,784 sq ft
They are building a water campus near there
Homes will double in price in 7 years.
Riverwalk, fun runs, bar hopping, restaurants, NO COMMUTE......"bad schools" but this is the area for young professionals, and she can easily find a renter for the other bedroom for ~$750-$1,000/month....basically paying more than half the mortgage.

Broadmoor is a great neighborhood for families & single professionals with big lots and solidly built homes with some cool mid-century architecture here and there. I've been seeing an uptick in reno/updating activity in the last year or two.
Tara is great, but you won't find much under $230,000-240,000 that doesn't need serious updating. And it's mostly cookie cutter with 8ft ceilings.
Westminster is nice but the good areas are pricey and hardly anything ever goes on the market. Also, some tiny, shady looking houses around the front area.
Sherwood is still pretty decent in parts (it's huge). The streets just East of The "former" golf course and south of Goodwood Blvd are consistently nice and quiet. Still a lot of money in this pocket. Too far out for my taste and there is some third world shite around Flannery / Old Hammond.
Mid-city around BRCC still has some deals, but you don't get much for your money.
There are some decent little neighborhoods along Old Hammond and Jefferson that are great : East Contour, Palm Hills, Palm Park lane, etc. Also, over by BR Country Club.
Shenandoah, Afton Oaks, Hickory Ridge, Stumberg Lane areas are nice, but you really have to pay attention to where you buy. Prices will reflect the goodness of the area. Also, the new woman's and Stumberg extension will help home values I would think.
You might still find something decent in the Inniswold/Jefferson Terrace area. Great area btw.
Oak hills is nice, but again it's a mixed bag with a ton of homes needing to be updated.
Springlake, meh...If you like spending top dollar for zero lot lines, limited square footage and questionable building quality go for it. Also, it's still too close to Gardere for my taste.
Magnolia Woods and Kennilworth are solid, but again lots of homes needing updating. The updated homes are pricey.
Hope that helps.

If you intend on your new hire being raped, that's a wonderful area.
Don't listen to these idiots. There was a rapist years ago but he has been in jail.
I have lived in the Sherwood/Broadmoor area for 3 years with no issues and I like it here.

You never said where work is, geographically.
You also never returned and said what she decided.
Any updates?
