Call the dog over with a treat and choke it out.

Little sister accidentally did that when we were 7 and 5 years old through the iron bars of our/neighbor's backyard... "Where'd the doggy go?"
After we moved and years later we found chocolate ain't very good for dogs.

To bad they don't make a bird house for your posts.

New neighbors moved in and their pit has been barking non stop for hours. What's the OT's suggestion and most alpha way to handle the situation?
Go over and talk with them first. Any reasonable person will at least give them a chance to make it right. Are they owners or renters because that might be another avenue to take too.
If they refuse then talk with animal control about it. It sucks but it is what it is, you have a right to not be bothered by their dog's barking as they have to own a dog.

I had the same issue. Neighbors didn't seem to care. I live outside the city limits so nothing I could do. Trashy neighbors have made my mind up about never living in a neighborhood again. Minimum of 6 acres I need.

I have had neighbors with barking dogs and I have walked over to their house, knocked on the door and told them they need to keep the dog in the house if they can't keep it quiet and that always solves the problem.

There are bark control devices that look like bird houses. They emit a high pitched noise when they detect a bark. It shuts most dogs up very quickly.
We bought 2 different electronic "no bark" gadgets and neither worked.
Through some sneaky Google research we eventually found the guy's cell phone number and started politely calling whenever the barking kept us up after midnight. That seemed to work.
Please don't poison the dog.

Put some ammonia in a spray bottle. Make a couple of trips to the fence each day. He'll soon stop.

Dad bought a device from Sharper Image that sends out a sound only dogs can hear.
His neighbors Shepherd refuses to bark now.

This. My stepdad's neighbor raised some kind of prize hound dogs that were constantly barking.Keep in mind this is a neighborhood where the houses are close together. Anyway, stepdad tried talking to the guy, going to the homeowners assoc, etc., until he found one of these high powered anti bark devices. Those dogs were as quiet as church mice after a few days and the dogs owner confronted my stepdad saying he couldn't legally do that and it was affecting the value of his dogs because no one is going to buy a hound dog that won't bark.

Start from the premise there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. It's not the dog's fault, his owners made him what he is
Much like the gays.

Just dont be like my next door neighbor, a 70+ yr old dog hating grump that moved in less than two years ago. I have dogs, person behind him has dogs, neighbor on other side of him has a dog. Anyway when he first moved in we were cool, would hang out and drink some beers, until he realized all the dogs were around him. He calls the cops all the time on peoples dogs barking cause they wake him and his wife up from their daytime naps. They obviously have to come out and take the complaint, but they just laugh it off and say he's such an arse. He even said he was going to sue the guy behind him. All of our dogs are inside and just bark like any dog does when they are outside running around and playing venting energy. Now he is the most hated person in our street.

Beat the dog to death. I've done it on multiple occasions. It's a great stress reliever.

Shoot the dog and replace it with a cat.

Dogs do not like the sound of a bunch of coins rattling in a can. Sounds dumb, but it works.

A while back I lived in a subdivision for my daughters schooling ( never again ).
Next door neighbor bought a bulldog. My driveway was next to his board fence. Every time we parked, the dog would charge the fence and bark, snarl, and jump on the fence. I bought a pack of firecrackers. It only took two days of lobbing "grenades" over the fence to train him.
