Nope but my parents were smart enough to teach me not to trespass.

They also wouldn't have knowingly let me do it over and over again

The mom is dumb and a bad parent, get over it. Does the tragic nature of this really cloud people's judgement that much?

Other dogs are also capable of killing 6 year olds.. What's your point?

Lots of dogs are capable. Hell, a small dog could do it if the child were knocked out and the dog were given enough time. The difference is how fast and effective pits are at doing it. That was the obvious point, dumbass.

Until what age?

Considering I live near a major highway, have no fence around my property, and I'm a responsible parent, probably around 8-10? That is something I would have to feel out as my child gets older. It was a different world 25 years ago, I always played outside by myself. I also knew not to go past a certain house on my street, or go into yards with dogs because that is their territory. Even at 6 yrs old I was aware of my surroundings, my parents made sure of that. The population has grown 10 fold since I was 6 yrs old, you can't just let your kids run around unsupervised anymore, it's irresponsible. Now if I had a fenced in yard, it may be a little different.

I guess I meant a good reason that made a pit a better choice over other breeds

I guess because we're free to make a personal choice. I own a 11mth old Rottweiler that weighs 100lbs. Almost any dog is capable of killing someone. Pits are extremely loyal and protective. They also make excellent hog dogs.

It all comes back to PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

No. And based on what was reported I agree. But why is it almost always a bull terrier? And why do people defend the dog? It did what it was bred to do. I'm not calling the dog evil. But there is no legitimate reason for keeping them around, other than to kill people.

This kid wasn't simply "playing outside."

And it's one thing for older kids to sort of roam around, but this is a fricking first grader, man. That's not the same thing as 12 year olds out around the neighborhood.

Also, I bet when you were six, you weren't going into peoples' yards when they weren't home when there were animals around, especially animals that a lot of people consider dangerous.

Nope. My neighborhood was full of unsupervised kids running the streets. Then again, I might be in the last generation that grew up like that.

Nope, when I was a kid, especially during summers, my parents had no idea where I was most of the day.

We used to jump fences to cut across many yards to get to our friends' houses every single day. Technically, we were trespassing. Yes, many of those yards had dogs in them, usually labs or GSD and even dobermans. Nobody EVER got attacked by any dog in a vicious way.

This world is so much more fricked up than it was back then.

SUCKS!

Yeah. There weren't pit-bulls on every street. Violent crime has gone down in those years. I do not live by the fear doctrine.

What has changed, other than you getting older?

Same here. I could also stand in the hwy and not see a car for 2 or 3 minutes. Now you can't even find a break in traffic to get on the hwy.

AH! So the legal penalty for trespassing should be changed to death. I got it.

That has to be at least the 10th time you've said that they are bred to kill people, which isn't true. But keep on looking stupid, I guess.

And I don't really give a shite either way about pit bulls, but I will step in and defend them from people like you spewing idiocy.

What is the deal with all of the pit bull lovers in here?
Is there no other breed of dog that meets your dog needs?
I am good with letting the current batch die out so you don't have to kill your current dog but let's stop allowing new ones to be made.

I'm sure most of us in this thread were similar as kids...but not as fricking 6 years old though.

If you're saying that when you were 6, your parents didn't know where you were most of the time, I am calling bullshite on that.

pits can be great dogs but there's a genetic inheritancy in them that often times sooner or later, they lose their shite and kids are unusually the ones on the short end of the stick.

its like you can take the dogs out the ghetto but you can never fully take the ghetto out the dogs.

Well, it's safe to assume your parents were idiots and it makes sense you grew up with pit bulls.
