what really sucks is they will be changing refrigerant in a couple more years. there will not be a "bridge" type refrigerant to jump from old refrigerants to new one due to UL listing with Flame ratings. once supply of old refrigerant/parts runs out, you have to switch to new units
In the long long run, it would be better to stay riding with an older unit until it finally craps out, for the next new generation of refrigerant. If you can.

can no longer "manufacturer" old style units. but you can buy one in inventory until that inventory runs out.
Incorrect. You cannot manufacture the non-M1 rated units. Also, contractors cannot install non compliant units starting Jan 1st in the southeast and southwest regions. There is no grandfathering (selling old inventory until it runs out) of the rule/law unless you're in what's considered the north region.
Eta: my comments above are regarding changing to a new condenser too. Old furnaces can still be manufactured and installed as a stand alone.

Yeah $2k seems high AF for heating element change in an electric furnace.

Sorry for your loss.

I got 2 quotes and the 4 ton 16 SEER Unit was $15K
The 15 SEER was only about $2K less, so I went ahead and bumped it up. Only saving grace is 0% for 60 months. Apparently if I had done it a year ago instead of adding freon, it would have been about 50% cheaper. FML

Our living room is on its own smaller unit and it won’t kick on as if yesterday. The thermostat isn’t dead and it even makes that click you hear when the unit is about to kick on, but it never does.
Doesn’t look like any breakers are tripped, so I guess it’s ANOTHER call to the HVAC people. Mind you, we just spent in the mid 30s $$ on HVAC a few months ago, for the other 3 units. Go figure the one that didn’t need to be touched now does this.

That’s apparently tricky too, because inventories are very low. I live near Nashville and he had to go up to KY to get my unit.

Seeing as how R22 was phased out 15ish years ago but is still available, I think 410A will also be available for a long time.

That sucks, but I’ll take single digit temps with no heat over triple digit temps with no AC.

Maybe semi-related, but the heating element in our dryer went out a few weeks ago. Repair guy wanted $450 to replace it. That’s like half the price if the dryer. I was thinking it would be $200ish. Even that would have felt like a ripoff but I still would have paid it just to be done with it same day.
Ended up ordering a $40 element off of Amazon and did it myself with YouTube as a guide

Just changed everything but the ducts. 4 ton, gas heat cost me 8k. My system was old and the new regs coming out are retarded so I bit the bullet
