Sitting in the airport right now. Old and shoddy. Otherwise I got nothing.

WTF? In NC??
This country is so far gone...

SouthEnd is actually becoming a dense work/live/play neighborhood that the city lacked previously, but that’s likely not important to the OP.
Other than a block or two near Dilworth, SouthEnd was pretty sketchy when I lived there. Not really dangerous, just kind of run down.

In case you’re curious.
This is what it looks like now. Complete with a jazzy soundtrack

Yep, unrecognizable. For reference I lived near the South Blvd and Tremont intersection(there was a bar at that intersection I used to frequent, but can't remember the name), and worked all the way down South near Tyvola Rd. I just did that trek up South from Tyvola on Google Maps. Most of the area closer to Tyvola looks about the same, maybe a little nicer.

Yeah that area hasn’t been developed as much, but it keeps shifting down South and Tryon as land prices skyrocket closer to uptown.
If you’re talking the Tyber Creek Pub, it’s still there.
I think Big Ben’s was there for a long time too, they just recently moved to find lower rent

Tyber Creek sounds right, but I don't remember it being an Irish pub. May be wrong though. Looks vaguely familiar on Google Maps. Spent a lot of time at Moosehead as well, but that was in a different part of town. Don't even remember where it was. Selwyn Rd?

CLT is a fantastic airport.
A lot of people live over the border in South Carolina if you'd rather live in a less restricted state. Fort Mill and Rock Hill are exploding in growth.

Montford? It’s still there.
That Montford strip used to be pretty popular but it’s going through an identity crises as the younger folks all gravitate to SouthEnd now and South Park has exploded and now attracts the 35-50 year old crowd as it’s not just the mall anymore

Charlotte is a great area however you will want to love in the outskirts and drive in. I work in town and drive in from the Belmont area which is a small town 20/30 mins outside. Culture is lacking and food scene is better however nothing like it is in La.

what about Pineville? about the same as Matthews? I kinda liked that area when we were there.

Charlotte doesn't have shite on Huntsville, AL when it comes to fricked up road networks. I can drive on Green Cove Road, Bailey Cove Road, Carl T Jones Drive, Airport Road, and Johnson Road...and it's the same damn road.

I had to use Waze to get every where for quite a while and I have a good sense of direction.
But when streets just meander and change their cardinal direction and name sometimes multiple times, it gets confusing

I honestly have not been over to Pineville lately. Not sure where you were looking but I would shy away from the Carolina Place Mall area of Pineville.

That's funny. I worked in CLT for a summer and definitely remember the meandering streets situation. Not to mention interstate traffic.
CLT is the banking/financial center of the South and is cleaner and better run than BR and Nola, but not as interesting or fun. It's a tradeoff depending on what you want in a city. As others have said it's ACC tobacco road territory, not SEC territory.
