Seems like when I was younger almost all white folks smoked one of the Marlboros (a few smoked Camels), and black folks were heavy into Newport and Kool.
I'd go in the store and see dozens of brands. Who was smoking all those Salems (other than my grandmother who died in the 70s) and Winstons? Not to mention Viceroy, Carltons, and Benson & Hedges.
Winston sold enough cigs to sponsor NASCAR for millions a year for decades, and I used to see their ads ("Tastes good, like a cigarette should"). But I've never know one person who smoked them. I'm guessing they were bigger in other regions.

According to 2017 sales data reported by Management Science Associates, Inc. ( MSA), the seven most popular cigarette brands in the United States are Marlboro (40% market share), Newport (14%), Filtered Camel (8%), Pall Mall Box (7%), Maverick (2%), Winston (2%), and Kool (2%).
As you can see by the numbers, Marlboro easily leads the pack (no pun intended) with a market share that surpasses all of the next six brands combined.
In 2018, Marlboro raised its market share to 43.1% of the U.S. cigarette market, which was actually larger than the next 10 brands combined. Marlboro has been the number one cigarette brand in the U.S. since 1972.

If you like the taste of tobacco, then yes. I like the taste of tobacco.

Back when I was in college, a Winston rep would come out to the bars and give away 3 packs to whoever signed up. Like every Thurs, Fri, and Sat. We'd all have 9 packs of cigarettes by the end of the weekend, every weekend, for several years this went on.... Still bought Marlboros
