Definitely year old crawfish or Chinese. My wife bought some of that crap the other day without knowing. Like chewing rubber balls. Dogs didn’t seem to mind

None of those prices I posted are Chinese crawfish prices. Not one single one
Chinese prices are less than half of those prices.

They should be half price, but some places are marking them up even more, taking advantage of the situation. They are selling them for $10-$11lb when they should be selling them for $7-$8lb. I’m talking about imported Chinese tailmeat

What is the usual standard price for crawfish by the pound? Just curious. $13-15 sounds steep.
OP is in Dallas. "Good" crawfish prices around here were around $9/pound when we moved here two years ago. We won't be getting any here lol.

how many pounds of crawfish make up a pound of tails?
Also those chinese tails have some tricky advertising...always using a louisiana name.

Real Louisiana Crawfish has a certified stamp and a seal on the packages. It’s the law

Roughly a sack of crawfish (30 pounds) produces 5 pounds of tailmeat I think. So 6 pounds of crawfish produces 1 pound of tailmeat

Bernard’s is one of those names Chinese crawfish use

i told my buddy to always check. He was all excited a few years ago about getting some for $8-9 a pound when i had just seen them for $12-13 a pound and i said dude you must have bought chinese crawfish tails

?? Seriously? Biden invented supply and demand? Supply low and demand is high = high price
You mean the demand of employees to be paid on average $18 an hour to serve crawfish in Louisiana?

Restaurant margins are razor thin 1-5% as is.
Now you want to talk seasonal restaurant margins?
These guys aren’t trying to take advantage, they’re trying to survive another season.

I see a lot of seasonal restaurants mark up more than others just to make a living off of 6 months of work. That’s not feasible nowadays but some are still trying.

i ask bc everyone wants to peel at the end to save for etouffee and what not but to me it's easier to buy the tailmeat. More power to the ones who don't mind sitting and peeling though. I mean we aren't going to let them go to waste but i try to avoid peeling at the end. I love crawfish but I love shrimp more bc i can peel them cold the next day and still be happy.

Yeah it’s not bad to peel a quarter of sack, whatever is left in the ice chest but a whole sack takes a lot of time.

Does 20-30 crawfish per lb of tail sound about right?
Posted on 1/31/24 at 2:03 pm to tgrbaitn08
Yeah I think a medium size crawfish is a little less than an ounce. So 20 medium sized crawfish are close to a pound.

Yeah I got the text early this morning. As usual the crawfish cartel clowns that control the price jumped the gun and screwed things up. With the reduced populations in ponds and still not much spillway sacks coming in from the basin yet, supply will remain low regardless of little blips of increased catches when weather helps out like last week.
IMO they should have made a more reasonable drop to $7 Monday or only brought it back up to $7.00 today. Thing is that the 25% drop to $6 that was supposed to help restaurants and retailers move more product didn't happen. They sold the exact same amount as before the price drop.
It caused just a few more boilers to post that they would open up but the supply is still not there so now the situation is worse than before. With another Arctic blast forecast to possibly arrive the week of Mardi Gras, not looking like a good start for boiling season.
