NOAA3 Mission recon is flying into #Danny now. They are recording strong winds & lower pressure.

Watch all that wind shear dissipate then we get a nice CAT 3 storm heading our way! We are all dead guys.

Dry air of course can do a lot to kill the storm but if Danny continues to intensify before it gets to about 55W it has a shot at making it through.
Danny is maxing out the current conditions and will be a great case study for low VWS dry environment systems. Given it's small size, it should be highly susceptible to any changes including ERC. It will be interesting to see if it just collapses or if it is a slow gradual weakening. You can already start to see some signs of increasing shear just ahead of the system.
I'm pretty stoked that they changed the flight plan and went in for recon 1st and saved sampling for the flight back. Great real-time data coming in.

The consolation is that the environment never really gets moist enough along the northerly track for Danny to redevelop.
As of now, the Gulf looks closed for business in the 6 to 10 day range. Danny's options appear limited if it does survive, unless it gets kicked out and strengthens on a trip out to sea.

You're going to have to dumb this down for most of us NOT named Peej.
What does all of this mean?

there is nowhere for that storm to go without interacting with dry air

Hurricane Hunters found 123 MPH winds
so yeah... Danny will be Cat 3 at the next update

Danny is officially Cat 3

Reports from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that Danny is now a Category 3 Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The maximum winds are estimated to be 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts.

Were the models projecting Danny to strengthen this much before it got to the Caribbean? It's a tiny circulation and he's cooking now. He's still got time to go.
The stronger he gets the better chance he has of making it through to the Gulf.

it was to really stay a 1... maybe get to 2... so yes a 3 was not expected
but the atmosphere Danny is moving into is not conducive to further development... so it should start to weaken this afternoon

A. Regardless of the PC bullshite of naming them after dudes, all hurricanes are female. No man has ever been that angry (at least no sane man).
and,
2. She will probably break up after wrecking PR, Hispaniola and eastern Cuba - and just be a whole lot of wind and rain by the time she gets into the Gulf of Mexico proper.
Some potential for restrengthening, but we'll know a whole lot more by Monday or Tuesday.
