I don’t know if anyone is actually mad over this. However, I do think that there are plenty of people tired of everything, including now kids cartoons, becoming all about race/gender/sexuality bullshite.
Disney casts an actress for a job. How does that make this about race/gender/sexuality?
Who cares if she's black?

Yes casting a black chick for a fictional cartoon character would be exactly the same as casting a white guy to play a very real and very important historical figure who was black.
Casting Idris Elba to play Teddy rosevelt would be equally stupid.

I think it’s great. They seemed to give the role to whom they thought had the best audition.
Of course the parents who teach their kids “not to see color” are the ones having the hardest time with this but masking it as they “don’t like change.”
There’s millions of black girls that don’t get to see their likeness depicted as a princess outside of Princess and the Frog, and even then Tiana was a damn frog for 80% of the movie. I’m happy for those little girls. Representation matters.

Forced pandering and virtue signaling is the coolest.

People are stupid. I guess you don't remember the same people that are standing up for black Ariel are the same people that demanded black voices for lion king remake because Africa, who cares if it is animals. They even went back and complained about how the original cast was only 35% black.
Now that a very Euro fairy tale is getting shite on for switching races, it's all who cares these are mythological and not real people.
Make up your damn minds if race is important or not.
All honesty I don't care if they make Ariel a true scaly mermaid. Would be funnier that way.
Have they announced who is Eric? No way mix race relationship would fly in medieval Europe.

The message that just got sent was “you aren’t good enough to have your own original story. Just hand me downs and taking from other cultures.”

I agree. So create a new african american princess instead of taking an existing character and changing the race just for the sake of "representation."

Let's get Tom Cruise to play Black Panther and see what happens

They did this and it was giant monetary flop. It's not PC to say but black princesses aren't going to sell and put asses in the seats. This movie will do well for a few weeks but it will have very little staying power and in 5 years we'll all be saying "remember that black Ariel movie? That was weird, huh?"

If the actress does a nice job in the role, why would anyone care?
Posted on 7/8/19 at 11:13 am to fr33manator
To you maybe, but the reception from back folks to this news has been overwhelming. They’re pretty excited. There’s been a tweet circling that mentioned an entire generation passed without ever seeing a black princess. 70 years to be exact.
I agree & I wish Disney would. But nowhere does it say that Ariel has to be white

They should do a remake of the original Little Mermaid Story.
quote:
“The Little Mermaid”: Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale is a 180 from the Disney film. Some parts align. She does see the prince from afar in his ship, and she does rescue him from drowning and fall in love with him. He doesn’t see her. She does visit the sea witch who takes her tongue in exchange for legs (and she does do it because the little mermaid has an amazing voice). The deal is the same: The mermaid can only remain a human if she finds true love’s kiss and the prince falls in love with and marries her. However, the penalty in the movie is only that Ariel will turn back into a mermaid if she fails. In the story, she will DIE if she fails. Also, while the prince remains a main motivator, the mermaid in the story is also motivated because humans have eternal souls, and mermaids don’t. The Disney movie leaves out that the penalty the mermaid pays for having legs: every single step she takes will feel like she is walking on sharp shards of glass. At first, it seems like the plan is working, but then the prince ends up marrying another, a woman he THINKS is the person who saved him (the mermaid can’t exactly tell him the truth, since she can’t talk). She is told that if she KILLS the prince, then she can simply turn back into a mermaid and doesn’t have to die. She just can’t do it, though. She throws herself into the sea, and turns into sea foam (though it should be mentioned that she then becomes a ‘daughter of the air,’ entering a kind of purgatory where she has to do good deeds until she MAYBE earns a soul, which will take about 300 years to happen). How’s that for a happy ending?

Because there is already an existing movie, based off an existing book, in which she's white?
You're changing race simply for the sake of changing race.

Doubtful. That movie was 10 years ago and it probably wasn’t the best story to introduce a black princess. My daughter doesn’t care for this movie simply because it involves frogs. Girly girls don’t wanna see princesses kissing frogs.
There was also huge marketing problems specifically with the title. The word “princess” turns boys away instantly.
