re: Place your bets- Why is this car overheating?

Did you go to a dealer, where the service writers are often paid a commission?
In your younger days, how shy or bold were you about asking a girl out?
Posted by chinhoyang on 4/21/26 at 5:37 pm
I was generally reserved and/or reticent, but every once in a while I would be very bold, usually with unsuccessful results LOL. "I can't bat for crap, but I think I'll give Paul Skenes a try." I also think the expression "there is a fine line between red arse and dumbass" applies.
There was a h.s. girl named Donna at Greenville High School She was super good looking. She would occasionally roll into Church's Chicken where I worked. I'm sure I looked great to the few girls that came, as I was wearing my shiny brown polyester pants, the official Church's Chicken shirt, and that stylish paper hat. Donna was always very nice to us (She was a Senior, we were sophomores).
One day, looked her number up in the phone book (long before cell phones) and asked her out. She was very cool, but of course said "no thank you." Asking her out was both bold and ridiculous.
She graduated and married, I believe, "some tough customer from New Orleans" (a bunch of small town Texas guys thought New Orleans was an exotic, dangerous place).
In a big city, a guy can ask out a ton of girls, just playing the numbers. In smaller towns, word would get out and you'd start being viewed as a weirdo LOL

re: Is there anything better than seeing a picture of someone that turned you down

The mentally healthy would just move on.
You sometimes hear lawyers bragging about how they "win every case they try." If that is the case, you are not trying difficult cases. You try enough difficult cases, you'll lose at least one.
Same thing with getting turned down ... if you aren't getting turned down, you aren't asking out women who are somewhat of a challenge.

The loud whistling hurts my ears on tape. They should be charged with some form of assault for that. Or, better yet, have the shite beat out of them.

I do a lot of labor and employment law work for large companies. I know of four who would never use a firm that was owned by private equity, ethics workarounds not withstanding. They want lawyers as professionals.

I paid for my own car (a 68 Roadrunner) when i was 16 and in h.s. Paid for it with my hay hauling money that I saved up.

A man who leaves with water and a pistol sounds like someone who might be thinking of doing himself in.

2017 and 2022 means it is really not as rare as you imply.
re: Would you help a complete stranger who is being mugged?

A good dog will intervene for you.
Some guy was being abusive (probably physically aggressive panhandling) to an elderly black lady walking in the South part of downtown Shreveport. I was taking photos, and my Belgian Malinois was with me. He was reactive to commotion, so I cut him loose. Aggressor sees dog approaching and hauls.
This was quite a while ago.

re: Kidney Stone Help
Posted by chinhoyang on 4/13/26 at 10:16 am to HogBalls
I had a stone bigger around than a quarter but slightly less than a fifty cent piece. They had to use percutaneous nephrolithotomy - a radiologist makes an incision and sticks a tube in the kidney, then they wake you up, take you to the big operating room, knock you out again (not sure what order, I don't remember anything after the initial anesthesia, then the doctor removes the stone through the tube (or breaks it up and then removes it). It was not fun afterwards.
Oddly, aspirin worked best to stop the pain when it acted up. It was not as painful as the smaller stones, because all that it could do was "roll up" to cause pain.

re: $5.99 per pound for a bell pepper
Posted by chinhoyang on 4/12/26 at 2:59 pm to StringedInstruments
My pepper plants (of various types) started kicking out peppers very early this year.
This said, $5.99 per pound for a pepper is ridiculous BUT peppers don't weigh a lot so you are looking at $2 to 2.75 per pepper.
We quit eating bell peppers for a long time (until I started growing them) because a stomach virus hit us 20 years ago, the most miserable I've ever been. After hearing up the stuffed bell peppers we ate, they just were not appealing any more.

I asked my wife, “Where do you want to go for our anniversary?”
She said, “Somewhere I’ve never been before.”
So I said, “How about the kitchen?”
…and that’s when the fight started.

re: They won't give me money because I am black!
Posted by chinhoyang on 4/4/26 at 12:14 pm to BoomerandSooner
Wife deals with that shite from time to time. Areturn, which is supposed to have a scannable code. However, the code rarely works so they use the backup whileyis the order number. Customer starts the rant about racism and she was told all she needed was the code. But, code did not work and all you had to do was give the order number which was on the paper in her hand. Wife listened for 30 seconds then walked to the back. She won't engage that nonsense.

Yelling at the teller does nothing, no pin no money. I hate when people yell, more so when they yell at someone who clearly has no power to override the security protocol.

Had a deposition in Midland on a Sat a.m. The plaintiff's lawyer called, asked to speak to me (he was coming down from Lubbock). Everyone is watching as I pick up the phone. He said he couldn't attend because he "had an accident". "Were you injured?" "Not that type of accident".
So, I figured it out and asked him "number 1 or number 2?" Of course, when I asked the question everyone in the room looked at me like I was a nut.
He then told me he got sick, rolled into a McDonald's, the stalls were full (to which I said "I'd have used the sink or urinal") so he cut loose in his pants.
A month or two later, had a mediation at a plush office building near Turtle Creek in Dallas. A young man attending took a giant spray diarrhea outburst in the men's bathroom. Muck was all over the sinks and stalls.

McMahon and particularly Kelly seemed to lack sincere enthusiasm. You can tell that Coach Wade is truly enthusiastic generally and specifically LSU enthusiastic.
Nice to have three high personality coaches in the three big sports.
