No, not at all, but it is far easier to use the momentum of them attacking you to outmaneuver them and throw them by continuing that attack of theirs.

What martial arts would yall recommend for a big 11 year old that plays o Line in football? I gotta decide what to put him in to keep in shape and wouldn't mind him learning more about leverage, body control, and other things that would translate to FB.

I've been told wrestling is the best for Football, but he doesn't have much interest in it and the wife is not supportive. He does want to do martial arts or MMA training. What discipline would yall suggest we look into?

Is there a problem, Kafka? Do I need to BJJ someone in the dick for you? Just say the word and I'm BJJ'ing that dick before the bully even knows what happened.

One thing about Judo is it’s legitimately a lot of fun to train. You learn a ton about leverage, balance, body control. It was a very positive bit of training in my late teens.

Always hear about Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing, etc. I did about a decade of boxing when I was younger but apparently that’s worthless now compared to the others. Just curious how judo holds up against the untrained bully or bar fight. Won’t be me, I’m old, just asking out of curiosity

Boxing is not worthless. Just look at the Holly/Rhonda fight. All styles have to make some adjustments for MMA or street. I've seen legit high school wrestlers come into BJJ and get smoked because they are not used to defending the neck and they train not to be pinned so they give up their backs easily. After just a short couple of weeks, pretty much all good high school wrestlers make the adjustment and pick up on BJJ pretty quickly. I mean, they have very sound fundamental grappling and take downs, which is awesome.

A lot of good boxers bob and weave, and that leaves them vulnerable to getting their head grabbed and slammed into a knee. Again, if they get into MMA they quickly learn to make adjustments. What a good boxer has is good hands and movement. It's almost always obvious when you see a wrestler trying to stike - it's like they plod around and aren't fluid.

Where I used to train, every once in a while they'd bring in a good boxer or good boxing coach, and believe me, students were wearing them out with questions.

No joke you can always tell who comes to these threads to pretend they know how to fight and who’s actually spent time on the mats. Getting thrown absolutely sucks. It’s abrupt and you hit the mat hard as frick and you feel like you’d break your neck if it was on concrete. Understanding how to grip fight and knowing how to throw somebody extremely hard at the earth is objectively good for self defense. Anyone saying otherwise doesn’t know wtf they’re talking about

Same here. I went to a place teaching general martial arts and some kickboxing. They started bringing in boxers who taught us how to box. Got very effective in striking just learning boxing mechanics 101.

For the average Joe, boxing is by far the best place to start. MMA/BJJ is great if you're fighting 1 on 1... but do you really want to go to ground in a street fight? frick no unless you like getting kicked in the head.

For the average, non-MMA fighter boxing will help you walk away from an altercation better than anything else out there.

Abso-freakin-lutely. When I started Judo, it was solid learning how to fall. Learning not to fight a fall - i.e. accepting the fall..going with the fall. Only after getting skilled at that did we move on to more advanced stuff. I remember getting thrown bigly one night (lifted head high) and I hit the mat hard. I landed correctly, but it still hurt. I felt this shock go through my midsection and I thought I was going to piss myself. Went to the bathroom and didn't need to go. Whatever happened freaked my nerves out. That was on a mat. Had that happened in the street, on pavement, I'd have been done.

The art of pissing yourself without pissing yourself that’s the shite you don’t learn by watching MMA fights

I learned judo when I went to USL for a couple of years back in the 90’s. I used it in a couple of bar fights. It’s crushing against bar drunks. Bar clashes end up being up close and the ability to just throw a fool was surprisingly effective against the untrained.

Now days there are so many schools with more than just grappling. I’d probably look at a jiu jitsu school.

I didn't go there, but I remember one of their instructors was some little 5'0" tall blonde woman. I've heard stories about her throwing big ole dudes around. That was the 80's, could have still been there.

Wrestling and BJJ. But I’m going to assume you are past school years so there really aren’t avenues for wrestling, but BJJ is a very good option as an adult. Get both wrestling mix along with submission and such from BJJ. Judo is a close cousin to BJJ but more focused on throws.

When I went into the Marines way back in 1968, I thought they were going to teach me all this cool martial arts stuff.

Nope, they taught us a little bit of this and some of that but mostly how to fight dirty and come away alive — better yet how to possibly kill your opponent.

Still have the know how but not even close to the strength and quickness. I’d probably end up dead in a brawl but the other sucker would be tired.

A trained grappler paired with a skilled Western boxer is going to kick the living shite out of 99.9% of the general population.

If he doesn't want to do wrestling (get him in BJJ or catch wrestling as alternative) plus either kickboxing/Muay Thai or just straight boxing.

I'd avoid Karate or TKD unless you want him to have badass spinning kicks.

Really though, just find a good bjj gym and do some bag training/sparring in the side.
