I admit I know nothing about this other than my son is taking BJJ from a guy trained both in this and Judo.
When they practice it seems like the students “go” with whatever the move is for training with little resistance. I’ve wondered how well those throws and takedowns would work IRL with a big dude who is not trying to go down and actively fighting against you. He’s 12 and his big brother (15, 6’2, 215) can stop him unless he really gets him locked up.
Can a person outweighed by 50 lbs actually make this work? At some point doesn’t weight negate leverage?
Honestly curious.

Always hear about Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing, etc. I did about a decade of boxing when I was younger but apparently that’s worthless now compared to the others. Just curious how judo holds up against the untrained bully or bar fight. Won’t be me, I’m old, just asking out of curiosity
Judo is great, especially if your defense plan is to escape a situation. Knowledge of leverage and posture gives you the ability to take your opponent off their feet while you stay up right. It can be as gentle or a violent as you want it to be.

Yes it can. I outweigh a lot of my training partners by 50 lbs but get smoked often even when training hard. For every move there is a counter and re-counter etc. the key is to train enough to chain them to use effectively against a resisting opponent. Say my hip toss isn’t working… I’ll switch to a trip, or then a sit down depending on what my opponent is doing.
So the key is to train enough sparing to recognize and effectively react. If your young one keeps training and the older doesn’t, he will slaughter him over the upcoming years.

Judo and BJJ are the best for self-defense because in these you actually spar (roll) day-in-day-out. I did Krav Maga in my early 20s and thought I was hot shite. Ends up it was a bunch of fakery. Been doing BJJ for 5 years now, and it's the real deal.

Many of those are good for quickly getting yourself out of a bad situation. I can snap a twig if I get into it with a drunk goon but that ain't gonna work on a drunk goon that knows some mma. Sometimes it's just good to poke someone in the eye and run.
