Shooting a dog for being on your property makes you a lunatic.

When I read this story I can tell immediately that it could be written from a different perspective and more people here would agree with the shooter.
This may be a trigger happy guy taking his chance to off a neighbor’s dog. Or it could be a regular guy dealing with a long time stray getting into the garbage and causing problems.
I doubt he was thrilled when he walked up and really later found out it was a loved pet.
My dad and grandpa would have hated on everyone in the story. The dog owner for not controlling his dog and the neighbor for violating the three s rule after taking care of a dog going through his trash.
There was a dog that would run around the area near our farm. It covered a pretty large range because I would see it all over. Every morning it would show up when I took my dog out for a run and come with us. I didn’t shoot it. I fed it better, put a collar on it, and it hung around. Three months later the owner finally showed up, admitted it was theirs, and asked for it back.

If the dogs owner would have been responsible no one would have been in this situation.
Unfortunately, I been on calls where someone’s beloved pet has bitten a child, attacked someone else’s dog when they walked theirs legally on a leash, and one case an elderly person was attacked. Animal Control had to take the animals in all the cases and put them down. In all the cases the individuals were charged criminally along with going to court to pay civil damages.
I am not going to say anything about the other person shooting the animal. No one except that person knows the whole story. He could have been protecting his family, himself, or his own dog.

I’ve wanted to shoot my neighbor’s dogs for crapping in my yard.
Or you could quit being a total count and just tell your neighbor to clean up the dogs shite. I understand why it pisses you off, but that’s on the owner not the dog. Ask him to clean it up. He’ll get the point

If your dog roams into my yard, there is a 100% chance I am going to try to pet it.

Yep, Say hello and show the critter a little love.
On a side note, I don't understand all the drama because a dog shits in the yard. It's biodegradeable. It will dry up and blow away, or wash away in the rain.

You don't use your yard?

Years ago my dad's neighbor shot my dad's cat because he didn't like it coming onto his property. The cat survived minus a leg. There was a law in that location that it's illegal to discharge a firearm within 400 ft of a residence--which is was, but we couldn't prove he did it. Jacka$$.

It was a wolf hybrid.
How many times should your neighbors allow your dogs to raid their garbage cans???

I live in the most dog friendly neighborhood/ subdivision, ive never seen a leash, everyone knows each other dogs names. It’s not an uncommon occurence to leave your door open and see one or more of our neighborhood friends standing there looking to say hi and see if you have a treat. I just can’t imagine living in a neighborhood that isn’t like this or havin to worry about my dog being shot.

Id probably give a free pass a couple times, before a more serious talk with the neighbor and then possibly calling animal control.
Shooting it wouldn’t even cross my mind unless it has shown aggression and there’s not another immediate option

People on here must not live in the country. Everyone's dogs roam free. I love to see Bo, my neighbor down the street's dog, come by to say hello when we're up at our property in Alabama. And I let my 2 beagles run free. It's great that they get to be dogs up there instead of fenced in in a subdivision.

Genuinely curious here. Do you keep your dog contained on your property? Anybody that leaves their animals loose to roam obviously doesn't care much about its wellbeing. Too many dangers out there.
It appeared in the story I read the dog snuck out. Not that he was free range. As a puppy, it’s not crazy he might slide under a fence or between your legs coming in the door and be a handful to catch.

I agree, I live in MS and there is no leash law in our neck of the woods. Dogs are running loose all the time. When you have small pets and children, you don’t know the animals that come into your yard sometimes.
That being said, I’m not running in the house to get the gun right away....they are animals and they are curious. Used to being around humans. But if one becomes aggressive, things change.
