I only tried it once and it took forever to get thru Broussard with all the stop lights and traffic

7 hrs 45 min taking 49 south at Shreveport to Opelousas, through Baton Rouge on I-10.

Just make sure you're not trying to cross the river at Baton Rouge between 7:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., and you'll be fine.

190, off I-49 at Opelusas, parallels the basin bridge(over Morganza spillway,) and either rejoin 49 @aPort Allen or go through Baton Rouge on Airline if traffic over the new bridge is bad

OK, a lot people on here recommended 90 thru Morgan City when I was looking for alternate routes. I read what you posted wrong.

that's a bit too out of the way, the caution about using 190 is all the little towns are notorious speed traps, got to drive the posted speed exactly

Gotcha, I used to use 190 all the time back before 49 was built.

Get off of I-49 S at 190 in Opelousas. Proceed to Hwy 415 S to I-10 BUT check the traffic on Google before that turn, you may be better off taking 190 to I-110 S if the I-10 bridge is all red.

This is my route and I usually stop and get some boudin at the base of the tall bridge. But I use the 190 bridge to cross the river and take 110 to I-10 to I-12.

Hwy 27 to I-55 ( 2 lane rd through the country) Decent drive if not raining.
I-55 to I-12
I 12 to Covington

I drive BR to Dallas and back at least twice a month and this is the best way.

Absolutely do not take US Hwy 71 from I-49 to US 190. Cops mother effing galore. Gotten countless Lecompte tickets. That's the only source of revenue in that town are people that want to shortcut I-49 to US Hwy 190 quicker.

You can definitely make it quicker that route. I've made Shreveport to Baton Rouge in 3 hours on that route many a times, but if you are going 29 in a 25 in Lecompte you will get ticketed.

On return trip from BR to SHV, when going on US Hwy 190 from East to West, once you hit climax of bridge over Atchafalya, slow down. There is always a cop at the bottom of the bridge on West Bound lane on West Bank of Atchafalya River. Every time. These shite hole towns in Louisiana don't have anyone paying meaningful taxes at 25k a year, so they ticket everyone.
