I've wondered what business is like in that line of work. Years ago I pondered it for a bit, but never looked into it very much.

I just re read the OP. What about a bobcat or piece of equipment like that? I think it would be a hell of a lot more fun then driving a dump truck all day. Can get a 3/4 ton truck to pull it and your insurance and what not is a lot cheaper. Work your own hours for the most part, pick and choose your jobs.

I have a friend that does this and works all he wants. He has a single axle dump truck and a flat bed trailer. A lot of his work is hauling small loads of sand, grave or top soil for folks that don't need a 20 ton load.

In the dump truck game DABs get all the work. In order to be a DAB you have to be a minority. You'll be on a job doing good and if DAB trucks finish a job somewhere else they'll cut your truck to put them on the job. Real talk.

I have a friend that got hurt and lost parts of his first 2 fingers on his dominant hand and he's trying to find something he can do (he was a welder).
. IMO he can still weld if he wants. One of the best welders I ever seen was a guy who had hook on one hand. 100% dead serious about this.

Everyone I know with a dump truck and excavator/backhoe make decent money IF they have some property to dig the hole or the drive to keep the equipment working. A non running piece of equipment is just an expense.

I agree with some others a mini excavator and/or skid steer, especially with a shredder, may be the best bet. Just a dump truck and you are at the mercy of the owner of the materials.

Exactly, makes no sense that he can’t still weld, he probably just needs some occupational therapy with a therapist that understands the dexterity needed for welding. Unfortunately industrial hand injuries are so common this type of therapy is easy to find.

If your wife is trust worthy, put the business in the name of your wife, so now you have woman owned business to help you get jobs.

Our oldest came off the pipeline as a welder and settled down now that he & his wife have young kids.
His BIL has an excavation business and contracted dump truck drivers to deliver. So our oldest bought a dump truck and runs deliveries for his BIL. Makes good money delivering top soil on dry days and delivers gravel on the wet days. He estimated his costs and broke down to an average of 3 deliveries per day over a 5 day work week to break even. He currently is averaging 7 loads a day and if he runs an extra day its straight profit.

So on average he is clearing a little over 2k per week. (Minus expenses: fuel, a % set aside for maintenance, truck payment & insurance).

Hes now about to purchase his 2nd truck and hire a someone to drive that truck.

Money can be made as long as there is construction going on and in N Ala houses are still being built at a crazy rate. He is anticipating another 6 years of construction in this area and trucks will be in demand.

Ha you would think it would be that easy but the black women with the state that determine if you qualify will deny your app. True story

An F-450 and a heavy haul flatbed trailer could bring in a pretty decent payday for someone willing to hustle.

Lot of good money in hot shot. As long as he's willing to go get it, he can make some decent cash.
