It was yesterday afternoon. There is fracking in the area. But the epicenter was at 3.4 miles below ground surface. I find it hard to believe that there is any connection between fracking and earthquakes. 6 months ago, they were polluting all of the groundwater here, now it's earthquakes. I just don't see it. There are people here that think that the gov't tries to control the weather with aircraft contrails in Kansas too.
This earthquake definitely rattled the windows at my house though.

I just got back from California and every person I met that found out I work in the O&G industry asked me about fracking
I work only on deepwater projects so that was my go to in order to get out of the conversations. It's amazing that Texas and LA is not experiencing all these earthquakes when they are fracking every day!

How deep does fracking take place?

Here in Kansas. Maybe 6,000 feet? I have no idea. I would assume that since the average depth for finding crude is around 5,800 to 6,000 fee that fracking would take place at that depth as well.
After looking at the data again, there is a range that shows that the quake could have been as shallow as 9,000 feet. That is still 3,000 feet deeper than where I would assume that fracking takes place. Again, I'm no expert.

Thx. There is a special on Chan. 2 (B.R.) on fracking. I gotta see this.

I felt it here in Nebraska too. It was a gentle swaying motion for about 30 seconds.

They are cracking the Mississippi Lime Play in that area. It's generally 3-3.5k feet down

Depends on the region, but in North Dakota the deepest well I worked on was between 12,000 and 14,000 feet deep. Or at least, that's what I was told. Took 11 days to frac it, partly because of delays, had a lot of trouble with guns not going off because of the depth. Had to pull 3 back up. Had something like 75 stages.
As was said earlier in the the thread though, most are shallower, ND has the deepest field. Again, this according to what I was told by my bosses. I wasn't there long before I got hurt.

Gunna hafta ban that fracking. It's too dangerous. Or someone's gunna get sued.

Studies have shown earthquakes can be caused when fluid, which is byproduct of various methods of oil and gas production, is injected into disposal wells. But a panel commissioned by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback found there wasn't enough evidence to link the Kansas quakes to oil and gas exploration.
When I was out there people were saying Fracking was causing the quakes.

Well IIRC San Fran had one over 6 since the World Series quake, and you probably didn't live there 25 years ago, so I don't know why you are laughing.
ETA: If you did you can laugh, that one was legit. Oh...and don't even act like the one in like July or August of this year was a 6.0 because it ended up just under.
