Last month I was talking to a friend who I've known since middle school, and he was asking about my job. I made an offhand remark, something like "well, you know, it's not like it's a calling." He was stunned: "of course it is."
It made me feel a little bad about my cynicism. I think it says something that someone who isn't a lawyer thinks more highly of the profession than someone who is.

I guess it annoys me more because it is more misplaced and undeserving. I hardly ever talk about work outside of work. In fact, we went to some event for my daughter's junior high, and most of our daughter's friends' parents thought I was in construction.
