My son has my wife’s old iPhone. We erased Safari, and control the apps he can download. No internet, no social media allowed. Only call and text. It’s worked well so far. He’s never on it because he can’t do anything on it anyway. If anybody knows a way a kid can work around this that I haven’t thought of please let me know.

my only advice is no social media like snapchat, instagram, etc. They may feel a bit left out but regularly explain to them why. Check your kids phone regularly (texts, installed apps, etc.) and make it clear it is your phone you are allowing them to use and it can be taken away at any time.
Good luck. It is a jungle out there.

I don’t have a good answer for you. My kids both have iPhones. They are good, well rounded kids, but, like you and me, they probably spend more time than they should on their phones. Having said that, you are probably pissing in the wind a bit trying to control access to technology after the age of 13 or so. Teaching them appropriate behaviors and responsibility is probably a better use of your efforts than excluding the tools that are a common part of everyday life. Again, not a great answer, but where I have come down on this issue after wrestling with it.

Why not just get him a smart watch, like an apple watch, with a cellular plan? You can text on that. If you already have an ipad, you can set parental controls on that and he can use that to text as well, under the account you set up for him to use the watch.

Apple SE watch with cellular plan - shuts down the communication/safety side of the "need a phone" argument kids/parents love to make
Ipad at home for the all important group texts
No phones. 8th and 7th grades

Just got my son a Troomi phone for Christmas. Compared it to the others and liked this one the best. So far the parent portal set up and customer support have been great. Phone was free with the monthly subscription.
