Toyota is a bit more expensive but I trust them more than Honda. I HATE a Corolla though. Bad experience. Awful space.

Kia has come a LONG way from a decade ago, and their warranties are industry best. I was in a K4 the other day and was seriously impressed. They are way roomier than I expected the safety is top notch, great gas mileage too. Worth a look IMO.

Hyundai is the geeky little cousin but warranty is good. I don't care for the Elantra. Would take a Honda over one but not a civic. Again can't stand the CVT.

Recently went through the similar process for wifes new Sportage. We bought the standard hybrid.

Cousin has one and raves about the gas mileage and really everything about it. It's an impressive compact SUV for sure.

Why exactly? Brand loyalty?

I mean they aren't the worst choice but also leave something to be desired. I'd go with several other brands before a Honda and especially a Civic.

Are you smoking crack? The only argument for a brand better than Honda is a Toyota and there are neck and neck. Both widely recognized as the best, and there's certainly nothing wrong with a Civic, one of the most proven vehicles in the road.

Name one care better than a Civic in the mid $20ks?

Oh yeah, that Uber-reliable CVT, definitely no well known issues with it crapping out. Look if you love a civic, more power to you. I just do not care for them as a car. Maybe it's from being former long time Toyota guy...just not my cup of tea and not without reason.

Don't hate them. Just...meh. Not impressed.

I honestly wouldn’t mind another Camry but they’ve gotten way too expensive for what they are now. Not even a single model under $30,000? Pass. Kia/Hyundai scares the crap out of me. Only way I’d ever consider one is a lease, I’d never own one outright. Their engine issues they have been having is more than enough to keep me away for life. I don’t know if the K4 is having the same issues but I’ll let someone else find out. I looked at Accords but they have the 1.5t in all the non hybrid models and that’s the engine that had all the oil delution issues since 2017. No thanks.

I’d buy the hybrid, but that’s just me!

Really my main issue with Toyota. They've rested on their laurels and raised prices without raising value.

My other issue is all the Toyota dealerships anywhere within 50 miles of me are notorious for being shady and all having addendum stickers. For stupid bs too like “engines for life warranty $1995”. Bs.

I'd take a Civic all day, everyday over any of those. This is a Honda. You're way off on your recommendations. Now I'd personally spend $5k more on a Camry, but Civics are great cars.

I see you recommending Kia's and Hyundai's above, that disqualifies you from making any recommendations.

"The Honda Civic is consistently ranked as highly reliable by Consumer Reports, often boasting above-average scores for long-term dependability, fuel economy, and owner satisfaction. The 2025 model shows excellent promise with near-perfect reliability scores in recent assessments. It remains a top choice in the compact car segment.

Reliability Ratings: The 2025 Honda Civic achieved perfect or near-perfect reliability scores across 15 of 17 assessed trouble spots, marking it as a highly reliable option.
Performance & Safety: Testers highlight the Civic's lively handling, comfortable, controlled ride, and suite of important safety systems.
Fuel Economy: The 2025 Civic Hybrid is rated as highly efficient.
Common Issues: While reliable, some owners have reported issues with cabin noise, infotainment systems, and minor electrical problems.
Best Years: While generally reliable, older models (specifically 2016) have had more reported issues; 2020 or newer models are highly recommended."

Hybrid is the way to go for a car or small suv. We put over 300k on a hybrid highlander before costs outweighed the benefits.

That's great. Do you want a cookie? You are welcome to spend your money where and how you like, and have every right to your opinion.

I have ridden in Civics. I have driven civics. I do not care for civics. I don't think any less of anyone for liking them, they just aren't my car.

PSA THE “CVT” IN THE CIVIC HYBRID HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CVT IN A REGULAR CIVIC ITS NOT EVEN REMOTELY THE SAME GEARBOX

IT IS MORE ROBUST, MECHANICALLY SIMPLE AND IS PROVEN TO BE LONG TERM DURABLE OVER 20+ YEARS

CARS HAVE HAD CVTS FOR LIKE 40 YEARS AND NISSAN ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO HAVE EVER HAD MAJOR MAJOR PROBLEMS

THOSE WHO SEE THE THREE LETTERS AND SCREAM BLOODY MURDER AND CLUTCH THEIR PEARLS ARE IGNORANT OF THE REALITIES OF MODERN CARS

THE HONDA CIVIC HYBRID IS PROBABY THE BEST CAR ANYONE CAN BUY FOR UNDER $30,000

IT’S NICE AND COMFORTABLE AND FASTER THAN A CIVIC SI AND IT GETS 50 MPG EASILY AND REPEATABLY

WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE

Didn’t skim the whole thread but what would you put ahead of the civic?

Assume you stick to the same class and size of car none of these are ultra luxurious so just wondering.

ETA I realize it may boil down to preference but it’s hard to beat a Honda.

ETA ETA I see your answer now.

I'm not a of the hybrid in that segment, but I understand the arguments for it.

Needless complexity in a already-solid car.

Love my Honda Touring Hybrid. I’ll never voluntarily own a non-hybrid again, short of some massive shift in tech.

I think that automakers would have been a lot more successful with a hard push on hybrids rather than trying to force EVs down people’s throats.

My wife’s next car will probably be a hybrid.

I think that was a combo of government frickery combined with EVs being really, really easy to design and manufacture. The car companies couldn’t resist.

But yeah, until we have our next generational leap in battery tech, hybrids are the way, the truth, and the life.

I definitely dislike the newer civics more than the older civics. Older ones didn't bother me as much and I've driven them, no prob. Nothing to write home about but no huge gripes other than styling and space, which I find worse on the newer civics.

Now older Toyota sedans I really liked, Avalon and Camry impressed, Corolla...meh, and then relative had a Corolla and that damn thing was so cramped and uncomfortable, and bought from carmax, tranny crapped out after 5k Miles, they refused to cover it. Needless to say frick corollas and frick Carmax.

Kia, I bought first wife a Kia Sofia from poster form here years ago...and it was a car. Was the most vanilla thing ever. Had a completely beige opinion of Kias and slightly negative of the forte but have had several in my circle get K4s and sportages lately and have been very impressed. They clearly saw they had a poor reputation to overcome and have worked on that.

One of the better value for dollar vehicles when it comes to safety and room, plus tech and styling. It's on the shortlist for when my teens get vehicles. And I would have sworn I'd be saying that about a toyota a few years back. Impressive brand turnaround

My F150 hybrid has close to 709 miles range and can run a good bit of my house if need be.
