Me and may dad did partial work.. and my dads friend did some of the work for us. MY Dad is a mechanic by trade so that helps lol.. but his friends has a paint and body shop. So it was a collection of the 3 of us. Honestly i got the truck a year ago, it had been barn kept and was in amazing condition. Needed paint, and new boards in the bed. And some new chrome accessories and such, but body was in incredible shape. Was zero rust anywhere on the truck. (Of course there was some surface rust, but nothing rusted out) no bondo anywhere on the truck. Had the original engine and transmission in it from the factory, and we have done nothing there except new plugs, wires, belts. Gave $4000 for the truck

stole it! that truck would sell for 20+ i'd imagine
the bed work looks great, is that a kit or just stained planks?

quote:want the truth? A sheet of oak plywood, cut to size and the marks burnt in to give it the wood plank look. Much easier to work with, much cheaper, and easier to put in and take out if needs replacing or something done. Had it at car shows and no one ever knows, they think it is wood planks.

My '90 Sierra SLE short-box stepside. I'm the second owner and I've had it about ten years. I gave it a 2-4 drop sitting on 22" IROCs, a cowl-induction hood and LED lighting all around. Repainted in the original red last year. It has it's original 5.7 maintained stock for reliability.

I also like the fact that you did not modify the drive train. I am a fan of original configuration cars.

Started with a rusty old 69 Baja Beetle that looked similar to this.
Finished build with 45hp of neck snapping fury at the rear wheels
It's a 1981 Fiber Fab 52 MGTD Replica.
The driver sits in the location of the original back seat of the beetle. A new steel floor pan and tube chassis was fabricated and the gear shifter, pedals, and steering had to be moved back several feet.

Appreciate it, and i agree. I wanted this truck as close to original as possible. I know it is not 100% original, but i wanted it like it was supposed to be

Hang on while I get into my time machine and go back to 1981 with my digital camera
Didn't take any pics when we built it.
VW chassis are pretty simple once you unbolt the body and remove it. Looking at this pic of a VW chassis the gear shifter was relocated back behind the emergency brake and the pedals are located on the floor pan about even with the front of the emergency brake handle. The floor plan we welded in was flat steel and square steel tube makes up the frame around the floor pan. Now the driver seat/bench is as far back on the floor pan as it will go. Lots of leg room. Shaq could stretch out his legs on the passenger side.

hell I was 11 and would have love to have been there
were you able to order a kit for the chassis and those motors are air cooled right?
one car I've never owned, VW

I was 18 and me and my dad built it. The body kit came in a bunch of big boxes. We had to rebuild the chassis, suspension, and the engine from the old Baja beetle and then assemble the body kit onto the chassis. Yes it's air cooled and easy to work on. I can pull the engine out by myself in about 15 minutes with two wrenches and a floor jack.
