Few years back my nephew (he's about half retard) got a scooter for Christmas, then took off down the sidewalk, some granny backed her car out and he broadsided her.

Flew over the car hood, fricked his elbow up and never road the scooter again.

They've got freaking electric skateboards that are advertised to go up to 35, that's right, 35 mph. That's insane. I wouldn't let Tony Hawk ride one of those.

I have a OneWheel that used to go 24 mph. That feels like 50 mph. I fell twice in one week about six years ago. Since then it won’t go above 18 mph. I am convinced it has software that judges the competence of the rider, and I’ve been pronounced “special”.

I just ordered two of the Segway ones for kids. Top speed of 10mph so really not worried about much on the safety side of it

Here you go, plus you can use it. The kids scooters suck and he will outgrow it in a year or 2. You can use the app to turn the speed down if you want. Only real issue would be if the kid is tall enough.

Too many parents seem perfectly fine letting their kids ride on roads on electric bikes

Just to clarify, all these kids were on sidewalks until they were crossing a road, which is where they all got hit.

And OP, the difference is speed. They can only pedal a bike so fast, and it's nowhere near the speed an ebike or escooter can achieve, even the cheap ones.
