Spending tax money on this isn't a bad thing. It is part of a city's infrastructure.

EATEL put in a full fiber network in Ascension and did so without tax money, why can BR not do the same?

Shitty excuse to never improve the city. This would make paying taxes slightly better for me.

Y'all don't understand how fricked we currently getting by Internet providers. Having a fiber network will drop internet cost.

comparing Ascension to BR.

So now we get to the crux of the issue. You're not even a BR resident.

Need a lot more info.

Additional East Baton Rouge taxes for all of the "good things" - (parks, libraries, schools, transportation, police, elderly, etc., etc. etc.) are killing me. I'm not willing to support one more.

This has been great for Chatanooga. Hopefully we follow their model.

I'm conservative and agree with the plan. Any homeowner in BR who's had to fight both companies (ATT & Cox) tooth and nail to get good service would feel the same.

The reasons are many but I won't get into that. The difference is that a private company hasn't and therefore a responsible city leadership should take the initiative.

It was a joke. Making fun of the people that loathe any kind of tax, regardless of its obvious benefits

yes, and if it encourages tech company's to move to the area, reduces your internet and cable costs, provides a newer more reliable infrastructure then it will worth it. The tax dollars generated from the boost in tech. business in the area would help it to pay for itself.

Cities have two opinions either be early to getting fiber or really late.

Google was looking at adding it to be few years ago because the city is a good size for it. They picked Kansas City instead.

Great question!

The way broadband economics work out, an ISP needs to acquire roughly 1/3 of the customers in any neighborhood they run lines to in order to break-even. This means, that in a perfect universe where every neighborhood was equally distributed amongst ISPs, AT MOST, you could have 3 choices of providers.

EATEL was fortunate in that they attacked Ascension when it was largely untapped, so they become the dominate provider in that area.

Having open access lines, removes that barrier and paves the way for consumers to be able to choose between dozens of service providers.

Probably because the local politicians wanted their pockets greased and wouldn't work with them.

You do realize you can make this arguement with anything....if this is what you think nothing will ever be improved.

See my previous posts. No new taxes. In fact, this could become a revenue generator for the city.
