Google was looking at adding it to be few years ago because the city is a good size for it. They picked Kansas City instead.
In actuality, COX made several phone calls and the city voluntarily pulled out of that race. Which is why, we need support for this: support.batonrougefiber.com
If you can, attend the Council meeting on 6/22 to voice your support.

Wow - shocked BR is considering this. I lived in Lafayette at the time of their fiber fight, and things got downright nasty at certain points. Tons of misinformation and lies put out by the incumbent providers. Now muni fiber is absolutely thriving there.

You just lost all validity to any comments you make in this thread.

I'd heard the former governor's wife had a charity that was supported monetarily by ATT, which is what eventually caused the withdrawal. I'm sure all incumbents had some hand in that.

Yup, this is also accurate.

shite like this makes me so mad, its one thing to get kickbacks on something that kinda helps the city/state but holding the city/state back because of self interest pisses me off like nothing else... well maybe cops being useless fatasses

Having the city put in a fiber infrastructure would be amazing.
Signed.
Signed.

Who would pay for the fiber and installation ?
The better question is who is getting paid?

People who are content with their provider and wouldn't actually benefit from such an undertaking.

the current provider would likely be forced to lower rates with increased competition. The increased economic development would also benefit these people.
The reality is it breeds competition, which is always good for the consumer.

You guys don't understand how fibre works...If the lines were run, COX or ATT would use them...

Yes! Which is great. But they'd have to aggressive compete for your business. Faster speeds, lower prices.

Next Wednesday (6/22), the Metro Council will vote to approve or reject an assessment that is the first step in building an city-wide fiber network in Baton Rouge. This means every man, woman, and child could have high speed internet, dozens of providers to choose from, and ultimately faster speeds at lower prices.
Sounds like a tax since the city of BR can't pay for it.

Why does "everyone" need this? If they can't afford the prices of the higher speeds now then who's going to pay for that?

We did it in Lafayette. Its not all that its cracked up to be...
My personal opinion is that govt should never compete with private enterprise. Govt runs out of money, it endlessly raises your taxes. Private enterprise runs out of money, it goes out of business.
