Where should I live in Houston? I'm 26, single, making decent money.

I think your opinion might be in the majority on this board, but not in reality. If we are talking better “city” philly wins in a landslide. Now if you are talking better place to live, than that’s a different discussion.

I'll take Dallas everyday and twice on Tuesday. Houston seems fun to visit, but hands down Dallas for me. The weather is a shite ton better up here than in Houston. But yes, allergy season is killer.

Oh and after living here for nearly five years, I can confidently say, I've never heard of any Dallas people talking about Dallas being better than Houston. Houston's humidity sucks arse (coming from a La native).

So?

I guess it's easy to think Houston sucks when even good or unique things are considered bad.

Houston has such an expansive medical presence that its facilities create another "downtown?" frick that place.

It basically detracts from the consolidated vibe and energy of a city by spreading it out, and creating worse traffic across more of the city. Nothing about Houston feels cohesive or like it "fits". To me that is part of the reason why I don't like it. And it feels completely generic...and is sprawling with expressways everywhere...and the city doesn't feel connected (the mark of a city without a well developed mass transit system like a NYC or Chicago)...and etc etc

Houston: Laid back. Stay in the loop. Stay out of the suburbs. Good food, shopping, sports teams, etc.

Dallas: pretentious, boring. Good sports teams, good shopping.

Dallas is more obsessed with Houston than Houston is with Dallas

I think if this twelve page thread is any indication, they’re both pretty equally obsessed with each other.

This board is always a good reminder that a large percentage of Americans are still scared of urban areas

Houston people love to think of themselves as living in a better city than Dallas. Dallas people seem not to care about this "rivalry".

I’ve found the opposite to be true

I want to try and empathize, but I honestly have no clue how to imagine this very vague description. I can tell you that if you put the galleria area downtown, you'd have a traffic mess of biblical proportions. Not sure how separate hubs creates more traffic. Also not a great argument in a Dallas/Houston thread. You land in DFW, you literally have two downtowns that you could go to, and then the area in between with a lot of the "Dallas" stuff (football stadium, baseball stadium, amusement park).

I did get a chuckle out of imagining you being told to meet someone downtown and freaking out because you're not sure which of the "five downtowns" they meant.

If you are in NYC, there is only one downtown and it is in fact down town. Cities that have “downtowns” without “uptowns” are weird.

I’m from Houston. Ive lived in Dallas since 2004. They both suck. Houston has better food. Dallas has better weather (by a thread). That’s about it. I lived in San Antonio for a year, FWIW. Nice town.

Also, the rivalry is real. Dallasites think Houston is trashy. Houstonians thinks Dallas is pretentious. They’re both right.

ETA: Frisco, Plano, Allen, Katy, Woodlands- none of these represent Houston or Dallas proper. The burbs are a completely different convo.

Dallas and houston proper have 1.3 and 2.3 million people so the generalization is dumb.

No one is saying that Dallas is the pinnacle all other cities aspire to...this is basically a shiniest turd competition.

If you don't understand how a sprawled out metroplex with multiple "downtowns" detracts from the energy and character of a city, then I don't know what else to say to help explain it.

Two downtowns in two completely different major cities 35 miles apart isn’t even close to the same situation as the downtown and galleria areas being separated in Houston.

Edit- no idea how to quote ???????

Everytime this thread comes up, this is my answer.

I have lived inside 610 for 10 years now and DFW > Houston.

Houston people are far more into the rivalry, DFW people I know dont say anything but “Yea, Houston is ghetto”

Dallas has more severe weather in winter hotter in summer. They have more hail and tornadoes but less effects from flooding and hurricanes. Both are great cities but HOUSTON tends to be more Baton Rouge New Orleans transplants. Dallas is more east Texas -Shreveport transplants. I actually prefer Fort Worth to Dallas. Both suffer from big town issues but have amenities that make them great places to live. It’s all about where you choose to live within these cities.
But HOUSTON wins solely on its proximity to LSU football games and LSU grads for me
