yes, a fricking ring.

To be clear, the engagement ring is the fricking ring. The wedding ring is the seldom fricking ring.

I wouldn't focus so much on the color and clarity specs. It matters as far as making sure the diamond is fairly priced, but no one is going to hold a jeweler's loupe to the ring. Like you, I thought I wanted at least VVS1 but after looking at the diamonds picked a VS1 or maybe even VS2 because I thought it looked nice.

The diamond was around $3000 for just over a carat 15 years ago. Now I make that much in 2 days, but my wife has no desire to "upgrade" her ring. Any woman who's worth a damn will be happy without breaking the bank.

Not everyone wants a house right when they get married. They prefer to have the mobility that renting offers.

Also, as someone else said, rings and diamonds are just like other luxury items in most people's lives. Do you really need a vehicle that is 40k+? Couldn't you just buy a used car for 5k, that does the same job?

This.

Plus the house down payment thing is always used in talks about weddings, engagement rings, etc.

Does it ever occur to people that there are those out there who can comfortably afford both a house AND a ring/wedding?

i disagree. I own two of them and look at minerals on a weekly basis. I will examine any diamond before i buy it.

I'm taking my time with this, but i think i'll buy one sometime in 2015. I know I want an ideal or better cut, E-D color and VVS1-FL clarity.

I looked at 1 carat and thought it was puny as shite. Is it crazy to drop 12-15k on a 1.5-1.75 carat diamond?
yes. Its just a rock, seriously. If you really think a 1 carat is puny then you have the wrong priorities.

fortunately she has a bracelet from her grandmother that we are going to get wedding bands made out of for her so I don't have to really pay for those outside of getting them set. The bracelet has about 5 carats worth of diamonds. I'm not sure what the hell were going to do with the other little diamonds.

Yeah, some people are fortunate and have the savings for these things. I lucked out and worked for two years without paying rent. Had a nice nest egg. Bought a ring and a starter house. 3 years later and we are upgrading to a very respectable house with a child. That 12k did not hurt us in the least. As long as you know your situation and can comfortably purchase the ring, spend what you like.

Be warned, they want a matching wedding ring for the "other" side of the engagement ring.

Honestly, it never stops.

Save it for an anniversary band (say like 5 year anniversary)

How many times have you used it to look at other people's rings? By all means use your loupe to make sure you are getting the specs you paid for, but my point is no one is going to care if the ring is a flawless or S1 once she is wearing the ring - unless you are trying to sell it.

My wife has 2 total carats worth of diamonds in her entire set and it is apraised for about 3500. We paid a little less though.

Yikes. You have some shitty diamonds bruh. My wife's ring is a little more than a carat and I paid $3700 just for the stone. The clarity and color graded out to flawless. It appraised for $15k.

My fiancee's gem is 1.04 carats, but the color, clarity and cut are on point! Was passed down from my mom; I can't afford that shite.. Bought the band though!

Color and flawless do matter. Go look at Zales and then an actual jewelry store. Noticeable difference just to the naked eye.

I use Zales because they have no problem trying to sell shitty jewelry

At a certain point color definitely matters, but you aren't going to see a difference between a D or an E.

Definitely, it's been a while since I looked into it but I think crystals are the "better" type of inclusion, if you aren't getting flawless.
