You should feel bad for starting this thread.

There was a story in my area a few years ago: a woman had created a memorial for her daughter. Trouble is, it was in somebody’s front yard. The yard owner took down the memorial, the mother got outraged and called the local news, etc etc.
I’ve told my wife that I’ll haunt her if I die in a car accident and she puts one of those stupid things up. She also better not dedicate her rear windshield to me, either (another tacky custom that needs to end).

Well, they picked up the pieces and stuck a test tube into his chest cavity to do the blood test. Nothing too out of the ordinary. I guess the transmission and hood laying in the ditch for several months after a grade crossing hit could be a kind of memorial as well.
Please start from the very beginning. This is very interesting.

The thing that gets me is that if anyone dies in some other way than a car accident you never really see a memorial other than their grave site.
Someone dies at the hospital- no memorial at the spot it occurred. Guy has heart attack on treadmill at the gym- they aren't putting a cross next to the treadmill.
I get people are grieving, but it has s always struck me as a little strange.

These's one at Friederick's and Wisner that's been there for over 20 years. Obviously replenished when needed.

I'm actually going to say one year....however, you must apply for a permit and pay a small fee, in addition to posting a $ 100.00 removal bond. If at the end of one year you remove it, you get your bond back. IF you do not remove it, the bond is forfeited and goes to the DPW of the municipality that is charged with removing it.
The memorial must likewise meet certain guidelines
( ie cannot obstruct line of sight, traffic, construction materials etc).
I am against the willy nilly setting them up
I guess we found the fricking politician that wants to tax the memorial.

Someone got killed in a car wreck on the road right in front of my neighbor’s house. Complete stranger. The family put up a small (< 3 ft) cross with various adornments in the ROW right where it happened. At first my neighbor didn’t say anything, but as the weeks turned into months and the family kept adding to it - a little trinket hanging from it, a picture frame attached to it, and eventually a solar powered light to shine on it at night - my neighbor began to complain to the rest of us.
Didn’t quite know what to tell him. I sympathized with the family, but I also understood his displeasure with a somewhat tacky memorial basically in his front yard.
It’s been a few years now and it’s still there, and they’ve never said a word to each other, I’m not sure he’s even met the family.

What about the 5 just north of the parish line on I-10?

Nothing Memorial about it. It’s just done by people who can’t deal or let go. If the body is removed and buried, the place to memorialize is the gravesite.

As long as family wants

When they stop manicuring it they are in the acceptance stage and it goes away

I've explicitly stated to family that if I die in a car crash, leave no memorial behind. Hell, I don't even want a funeral, just cremate me, spend the rest on a cool vacation, and chunk the ashes where you see fit.

There is one in Shreveport on line avenue for a guy who died on a motorcycle with a sign that implores people to look out for motorcyclists. It makes it sound like irresponsible drivers were the cause of the crash. The guy died because he was going 30+ mph over the speed limit and didn’t see the line of cars stopped at the light...

I see the one on Drusilla in front of the park, frequently. Makes me sad for all the kids who died there and I send a quick prayer to the families.
I like them in 3rd world countries because they mark dangerous curves in the road.

I feel sorry for the road crews that mow around that shite. If I were them, I'd be like "opps, I didn't see it in that high grass."
