re: How prestigious do you view an MBA to be?

For me it was a just a door opener. I have degrees in geography and most people in the business world have no idea what we do. So to put this on my resume just enhances my professional opportunities.

On par with law school or engineering?
I do believe it takes effort, but I know too many people who had no idea what they wanted to do after graduating who went and got an MBA. I don't know a single person who went for an MBA that could not accomplish it. Not saying everyone who has one is just garbage. But I think it really takes a prestigious school to make an MBA seem prestigious. Not always necessary for a Law or Engineering degree.
Wife has hers. I've looked into getting mine and had bosses ask me why I would do it, that experience focusing on the "business" side of our industry would cover anything I learned taking the same time to get the actual degree. I think the engineering and MBA combo is a bit "overhyped", but that may also just be in my industry.

I have a buddy that got a Psychology degree, and then immediately went on to get his MBA. Uses neither now

Just like any advanced degree, it depends on where it comes from and what you do with it. An MBA however is not a professional certification like a law degree or an MD is. those have to be board certified.

I have one. It's not worth shite.

you can get an MBA online from a ton of places now
I have an MBA via the traditional classroom setting and it has opened many doors. I know for a fact that many hiring managers don't view an eMBA and online degrees.

Its a conversation starter. I sell myself after that.
These topics always come up.
The better question to ask is which "schools" are prestigious? I think we all know that answer.

Outside of the Ivy's and maybe 4-5 other schools about the same as getting any master's degree.
I know several ivy MBAs and their degrees aren't any better than almost anywhere else, but the name on their diploma gives them access to jobs and opportunities that at 4.0 LSU MBA would never get right out of school.

By itself, not very prestigious.
But there just some places you can't get without it. Look around at any decent size business and look at the education of their executives, MBA will be a very common sighting.

I knew someone who got an executive mba from Harvard and you could never get through a conversation without him mentioning his time at Harvard.

Any MBA program worth a shite basically won't accept you without prior work experience unless you have a 750+ on the GMAT, and even then it is unlikely.

Context probably matters more for an MBA than almost any other graduate degree.
You simply aren't getting in certain doors without an M7 degree, but probably more than law or engineering, you can create your own path. They are box checkers in a lot of industries (hence the plethora of online and locally-focused type programs).

You should call him out on it because Harvard doesn't offer an executive MBA program. They have various alternatives, some only a few days long, some 3-4 months, but no eMBA program.

Yeah, they have some certificate thing. I know a guy like the other poster. He literally works it into every business meeting. No one believes him.

You can't be serious. I've got both and there is no comparison.

They basically charge you $1,000+ per day for those programs. Even their "Governing for Nonprofit Excellence" program is $4,650 for a 4-day program. Many others are north of $6,500 for 3-day programs. Basically a shite ton of money to say you went to Harvard.

Are you saying the law degree is more prestigious? Or the MBA?
