That is likely on the outskirts of those zip codes. You'll spend a good bit more than that in the recommended neighborhoods. However, your home value will be protected and re-sell will be easy.

Yeah I have no idea where the ideal homes are located. Just looking at Zillow lol. The only thing for me is the lack of garages in those two zips in homes around my price range.

I was actually looking at that earlier. Seems like I can get a lot for the money in that area. I’m seeing multiple listings for sub $200k 4bdrm, 3 bath, 2k+sqft

Yeah.. you arent going to get bang for your buck, us 35801 and 35802ers pay for location ha and high re-sell value.

The more I look it seems like Madison or Athens is probably the better bet for me.

Definitely take a couple of days to drive through them to see what you think. You can get a better idea for commute times (if you are thinking of Athens) and traffic (if you are thinking about Madison).

But you can't really go wrong with either really. North Alabama is actually a nice place to live and raise a family. You couldn't pay me to live anywhere else in Alabama (well maybe down at the bay), but the Huntsville/Madison/Athens area is pretty nice, and really good job opportunities (especially if you are in the tech/engineering fields). There's definitely a reason we have so many transplants from around the country here.

Not gonna lie I'm a little nervous as a first Time home buyer

I would definitely rent for at least a year. That would be a ton of stress on me moving to a city I've never lived and making a huge decision to buy.

I don't know your budget. Most spacious garages in those areas are going to come from renovated houses likely in the 450-750k range. Though you can likely find a few in the Jones valley area in the 300k (maybe a little less) range that haven't been renovated.

ETA: renting for a year is a good idea

I am shocked at this thread.. Do we all live in Huntsville now?

I am near Sparkman high school off of 53. Really like the area but the traffic on some days is just awful.

I know in this area houses 250k and below don't last on the market more than 48 hours so be prepared

There really aren't a lot of TERRIBLE places to live in the Huntsville area. And the few that are terrible, it will be obvious to you. Even the "bad" schools in Huntsville probably aren't as bad as it's being made out, when compared to schools in most of the south.

That said, we moved from our little starter house in the UAH/Jordan LN area when we decided to stop homeschooling our daughter and put her in school. We ended up in the Madison County school district, about a mile outside of the Madison City Limits. We're not OT ballers, so we bought a 3br (plus a finished room over the garage used as a 4th br), 2 1/2 bath, just under 2000 sf home on a small lot, with 2 car garage. The neighborhood was built in the 90's. We paid around 160K. The zip is 35757. Lots of new construction in the area too.

Some of us are clearly neighbors, but we would never know since no one talks to their neighbors

Madison is crazy real estate wise. I’m searching for at a minimum 4bdrm 2000+sqft homes and there’s a ton under $250k. They all seem pretty nice albeit “tract” homes. Real estate there is dirt cheap.

Just be prepared in that price range that the houses sell very quickly in the desirable areas. Lots of houses going asking price right now

I just paid around $330,000 for a 4 bdrm, 3 1/2 bath, 2654 sqft ranch house that we built in a new subdivsion. But the builder we went with is a higher end, local builder (Stoneridge) because we wanted 100% brick, 3 car garage, and 1 story. But we looked at a couple of homes built by some of the lower cost national builders like DH Horton, Mungo & DSLD that were in the $230-$275K range.

A lady I work with just built a house with Murphy Homes which is a local builder in the new Greenbrier Hills of Madison subdivision. She is happy with her house. And another guy I work with is about to build there. I think they're in phase 2 of that subdivision, and their supposed to get a pool, cabana, fishing lake, and walking trails. They have 3 and 4 bdrm 2 story homes in the $230 - $275 range. If you are willing to wait 6 months while the house is being built, you might want to look there.

I get to work on Redstone living downtown quicker than Madison people. Heck I could get to the Jetplex in better time when I worked there.
