I also want to encourage everyone looking to donate or help to also look for organizations, churches, etc. that are providing relief to the areas around Corpus Christi that took the brunt of Hurricane Harvey during the landfall. Houston obviously gets a lot of the attention (nothing wrong with that), but these places need to be remembered and helped, too.

quote:Absolutely. A lot of the links I included in the volunteer section cover Corpus Christi and other areas of Texas, but I'll look for some more specific charities that cover those areas.

TX state patrol turning people around coming into TX with a boat

Is this because the storm isn't over?

This response has been amazing with lots of folks figuring out how to best do this with Zell, Google maps, Facebook, etc, but it seems to me like the Uber/Lyft platforms would have been more effective. Uber could have set up the Houston Area temporarily allowing boat owners to set up as drivers and those needing rescue as customers with no payment system. (if all of these people can download Zell, they could download Uber) I'm sure there is a back end admin function with a global map of all activity that could be shared.
IMO, it's a missed opportunity for these companies.

Just heard on Zello that they have 30-40 boats en route to Texas from Baton Rouge.
I hope they don't turn those guys away.

quote:Agree. They should develop a disaster relief mode with the functionality you describe. I think it's awesome that AirBNB enabled a mode where people could request or offer lodging during disasters (as noted in OP).

Does anyone have a link for all school closures in Louisiana? All the articles I could find are parish-by-parish.

**UPDATE on reports that police are turning people away: I just heard on Cajun Navy dispatch that they are NOT turning away boats. They are turning away people coming to help who DO NOT HAVE BOATS. Please proceed to Texas if you wish to volunteer with search and rescues.**

People without a motor on their boat (e.g. canoes, kayaks, etc.) are advised to not come in yet. The currents, rain, and wind are "pretty gnarly".

this is incorrect. they just repeated to hold off and are routing any boats coming into TX to LC convention center or youngsville.
People who ARE being let in are those that are certified medical professionals and first responders.

They just repeated on the Zello that they are letting people in.
Obviously there are conflicting reports, so I advised that in the OP.
I just heard on the Cajun Navy station that they are turning away people with the wrong kinds of boats or people without boats.
I do think it's totally possible that they are turning away people in some areas and letting them in in other areas.

They are definitely turning boats away, you are apparently the only one who heard different.

I can't be the only person who just heard 4 different people on the Cajun Navy Zello app that said they weren't turning people away. A lot of people are asking for that clarification and it's being answered with "no, they are not".
