We need duke, rds and possibly legend to chime in
Mostly RDS to tell us what happened or is happening and Duke to dumb it down for us to understand

Then there should have been iceberg formations in 2005

I will take a stab at this.
Sea surface temperatures are temperatures measured at the surface of the water. In areas where the gulf is extremely deep, water deep down doesn’t receive as much sunlight and is much colder. If I remember correctly, at the bottom water temperatures can almost reach freezing but it doesn’t freeze due to pressure at those depths.
With that said, as a storm sits over a body of water, it churns up that deeper cooler water moderating the surface water temporarily until the sun raises the temperature back to normal. Also, rain fall can also chill down sea surface temperatures.
But the effects are only temporary and last for a few days or weeks until the normal thermal cycle resumes and temperatures moderate back to normal levels.
LaNina and El Niño events work on much wider scale where Pacific waters near South America get cooler or warmer depending on the cycle and the upwelling of cooler water from the bottom causes global changes in winds and weather patterns.

The 06Z GFS is nothing more than a couple rainmakers across the gulf. Hopefully this is a good trend.

How is this changing so drastically?
Sorry, new to watching these models.

Because nothing actually exists right now. Any models are just "guessing" based on changing weather patterns. Any changes in those patterns have significant impacts on future development.

quote:You aren’t wrong, SSTs are important but a better measure of available “fuel” for tropical systems is ocean heat content,,,,this measures temps of the water at different depths,,,,this is important because as a storm churns up water, if the ocean heat content is high, then the churned up water from the depths isn’t as cold as normal and this amounts to a “higher octane fuel source” for hurricanes vs having colder water churned up. Hope that’s clear as mud?????

Yeah, there isn’t even an investigation for the region yet due to a developing storm, so it’s all guesswork.
Once you start seeing an Invest on Weather Underground for the region, imo that’s when it’s worth looking at the models.
That is still at least a day or two before any local media starts its coverage, and you won’t be behind the rest of the people in your city, in terms of prep.
I think this potential storm has actually been more consistent than Francine was, early on before it had an actual name.

We’ll need a cold front to come in and sweep it east right?
Sorry but based on the Helene thread, where you all were hoping it sweep east, well you got your wish.
Florida took Helene. Louisiana/Mississippi need to eat this one. Definitely hoping any cold front is delayed and it stays west.

Can yall stop with this shite? No one on the gulf coast needs a hurricane. send that shite to new jersey

Debby and Helen were more than enough for us thank you. And honestly Francine was a Cat 1 and a weakening storm at that, compared to Helen as a Cat 4 and strengthening at landfall.
Obviously I hope it's a fish storm, but if someone has to take it on the Gulf Coast then it needs to be another state outside of Florida this time.

Tell that to this a*hole in the Helene thread.

Can it be Florida’s turn? Please?
Well that poster got his wish. Sure I would say send it to New Jersey but it's this system will be nowhere near the Atlantic.
So yes here in Florida we've taken one for the team. Now it's time for another Gulf Coast state to take the next one if it does form. Hopefully it doesn't.
