. Two similar cars with similar stickers have different OTD prices. I’ve seen it twice so far.
The ones that have been on the lot longer usually have steeper discounts. Stale inventory has monthly interest payments. They want to move those first.

Most likely what happened is the poster initially talked to some internet person who has never even set foot inside the dealership. (Or possibly an AI)
All they would have is an internet database which is usually slow to update.
The salesman at the dealership might not have ever heard of the person coming in before then.
"It just sold" is probably just code for "it's online but it's not on the lot."
this is literally exactly the same thing that i said lol

recently went car shopping for the first time in awhile.... carved out a day thinking I would get to test a few...choose color... literally whole dealerships saying ehhh.. we don't really have any of what your looking for in that trim level. Found one I wanted and had one option.

I agree on Carmax. Took my son to buy his first car (to buy on his own) yesterday. He found 3 online he liked, pre-qualified online, made an appointment for 3:30 to test drive. We were a little early, so took 10 minutes to walk around lot and look at the 3. Test drove his top pick first while they appraised his trade in. He was pleased. Went in and told salesman we would be getting that one. Asked what documentation they needed (check stubs, etc). He told us we don't need anything from him. That shocked me, since he is a full-time college student who works 20 hrs a week at a minimum wage job buying the car on his own. Started signing papers at 4, we were driving off before 5.

Yeah, you can take care of so many things now from home if you don't test drive the vehicle on the purchase visit, you can be done in less than 45 minutes at most places.
I still do a quick test drive but it's more of a formality just to make sure I enjoy the vehicle.

The last time I bought a brand new car was 25 years ago. I still get a birthday and christmas card from the salesman every year. He never bothers me, just sends an oldschool card. If I ever had no choice but to go to a dealership, I am going to that guy just based on his incredible longevity.

Also I’ve tried the phone call for the OTD cash price and every single one wants my address, my name, my info, and tells me I have to come in to get a price.
I would have to think that's because it's a different sort of industry.
It's not like you are calling to ask the price of a piece of furniture or a case of fish. It's the second biggest purchase of most people's lives.
You call one dealership for an "OTD price", sight unseen, and what's that supposed to give you? There are a ton of variables.
Some dealerships are gonna promise you whatever you want, then when you get there it turns out the price they quoted doesn't include the features you want. Or what they quoted you on your trade goes up in smoke because they didn't see the chip on your windshield or the dent in the bumper.
And aren't there prices on the website already?

If you are driving to another state to pick up a vehicle, you’re doing it wrong. The dealership I work for will deliver out to about 300 miles. We have been known to pay for a plane ticket for people farther away.

Just wait.
They seem good on the surface but end up doing people dirty dirty in the back end.
Sold someone very close to me a "new" Corolla...tranny failed under 5k miles. She brought it back and they wanted 5k for "fixing" it.
She told them to keep the damn thing. Carmax sucks balls. I have had horror stories

Wasn’t there an uptick in Corvette sales after Alabama hero Henry Ruggs burned a woman and a dog alive?

During covid my teen needed a starter car
One Saturday I got on line at a dealership and found a (used) Nissan Sentra, low millage , in our price range, he liked the way it looked. Called and spoke to a young lady who was excited and invited us to come look at the car and test drive it.
We show up, no car. They try some bullshite about well someone came in and bought it between your phone call and you driving here (30 minutes).
bullshite
I was about to lose my shite on them but it was a special day for my kid so I didn't want to ruin it, we later found a nice used Hyundai Elantra he still drives.
FOOK A CAR DEALERSHIP
When I'm shopping for a car, bait and switch will instantly make me leave a dealership. If they are doing that on the sales side, who knows what the parts and condition of the car are.
