Of course living across the bay is better, but Mobile is not as bad as SS makes it out to be.

No it's not a bad place to live. Its a terrible place to live. The place is boring, the people are weird. It really is just a a very bery shitty place for the size of it and having absolutely nothing to to.

Whichever is closest to NOLA

The drive down old 90 from BSL is beautiful. We always stop in the Viet part of the east and either eat pho or pick up Banh Mi. I commuted to Michoud for years and it was a great drive. Every single time I travel to/from NOLA I take this drive.

Slidell.
Plenty of nice housing communities on/near the water, close to NOLA (family and friends), just as much time to Baton Rouge for LSU events as NOLA, closer to I-10 for beach trips out east plus I stay in La.
For me, remaining friends with people I have close relationships with and staying close to my family would be huge.

Does Diamondhead still exist? Seemed like a nice place back in the day.

It does, and like Timber Ridge in the Pass you can get a nice house for relatively cheap. It just sucks though and no one besides old people want to live there.
