I learned that lesson about 15 years ago. If I am taking a vacation, I'm adding at least an extra day on the back-end to relax at home after I get back from the trip (sometimes I add a day to the beginning so I can take time packing and prepping).
It's a game-changer.

Yes. Wait until you retire. It’s glorious. You can do what you want to do and don’t have to do anything you don't want to do.

We flew back from Europe one time and went to work the next day.
Huge mistake

A whole bunch of things are more important than that.

Depends what time I get back. If I get home before noon, I'll go to work the next day. If it's late afternoon/evening, I'm taking the next day off

So, you can't imagine going into work after a 5 hour drive?
And not being home for a week. Having to unpack everything, go get groceries, cook food for lunch the next day, etc.
ETA: The last trip I did not plan a day off after getting home was for the LSU-OU playoff game in 2019. Flew to Atlanta, I was living out West. Flight got canceled, had to spend an extra night and had the first flight out the next morning.
Next day got home around 11am. Had to be at work for 12

This feels like one of those Progressive young homeowners becoming their parents commercials.

It depends on where im going and how long the trip is, but yeah having a rest day is nice.

I used to work with people like that who would get back home late like at 9PM the night before, then show up the next day exhausted and regretting that decision, but making that same decision over and over. May as well take a sick day if you are dead set to not burn a PTO day.
When I get home from vacation with the kids, I am spent. It takes me a day or two just to get settled back into a routine, get the suitcases unpacked and load up the washer and dryer. After 1-2 days I am ready to get back at it.
Yes it is important.
I spend a little time each day the week before the trip to pack, finalize plans, review what has been packed and what is really needed or not needed, and have everything ready. The day/evening before, its just a review, staging, and packing the car. Its a methodical process but nearly stress free. I always get a kick out of a couple with kids who are freaking out that they are going on a big vacation to a place like Europe the next day, and have yet to pack. I get entertained by it.

Why don’t you just leave early in the morning the last day. It’s 5 freaking hours. Leave at 6:00am and you’re home before noon with a much easier drive and less traffic. If you’re staying with in-laws, they’ll appreciate it as well vs. you hanging around all morning ruining anything they wanted to plan that day.

I usually dont have a day off but treat my first day back as a quasi day.
