I know that. They would eventually figure out some way to recover.
I could easily wipe every bit of data and every single backup. It would be hell for them to recover.
I would never do such a thing. This is how I make my living after all, but I don't like having that much power.

My work blocks fricking EVERYTHING besides Tigerdroppings
I don't care if they look into my emails and stuff. Its not like I do anything against the rules.
Question though:
I can take my laptop off the company network, thus removing all filters, etc. Can they still track what I am doing i.e. posts I've made on here even if I'm on my personal home Wifi? I am always on Google Incognito when on tigerdroppings.

Question for you IT folks:
Several years ago, I doubled the RAM in my computer. It really needed it.
A) How did you find out
B) Why was this a bad thing... all y'all did is take it out and then put back in the same amount of RAM you took out. Just not the RAM I put in.
C) I got 30 days probation (which was canceled by our COO because he said it was stupid). Was it THAT serious of an offense? Seems like I was doing you a favor.

There are software tools that can inventory every computer on the entire network, down to RAM brand and quantity. The inventory software probably sent the IT department an alert of more RAM in a laptop. And yes, probation for that is dumb.

This would have taken a great deal of time for me to have done. Backup tapes were secured in a locked file cabinet that I had 1 of maybe 3 keys for. I guess I could've discretely snuck a strong magnet in there, but I don't know how effective that would be without multiple direct passes to the tapes.

ok the last one is a joke. really you should have sent a req to IT to upgrade the RAM, and IT should have done it no problem. we dont need people making changes on their own though - they may not know as much as you do about it.

A.) Well most companies order the same computers with the same specs so if someone worked on it and noticed 8 GB of ram say instead of the 4 it was ordered with (easy to find this right click properties on computer). As to why it's a big deal? Who knows maybe it voids the warranty but this year instead of ordering computer replacements we just upgraded the ram and put a new image on them.
B.) ALWAYS ask permission first. Maybe your company wants to stick with one specific type of ram (Like Kingston for instance)
C.) Yeah not probation worthy.

I did. They didn't react quick enough. I am impatient. I waited an entire couple hours. Stopped by a computer store on the way home, got it, put it in the next morning.
I KNOW I shouldn't have done it, but hey... doesn't initiative count for something? They didn't have a problem when I hooked up all of my people to every network printer in our entire division, instead of just the one they had been using.
Also... how come nobody in IT likes me?

I disagree. People need to understand that when IT assigns them a computer, it is STILL the companies computer. It is not their personal play toy to do whatever they want.

What about content (not usage) of a personal laptop that is used for work, ie, on the network while at work. Any specific dangers there? IOW, never accessing questionable sites while at work (which should be obvious) but is my celeb upskirt pic collection discoverable if it isn't in a shared folder?

Work gave me a computer. I use it just for work (and tigerdroppings).
My personal MacBook at home is not something I need anyone looking into

Same here except they are stored off site. Also, anytime a tape/tapes are picked up out of normal rotation an email is sent to everyone on the list letting them know.
