I disagree. People need to understand that when IT assigns them a computer, it is STILL the companies computer. It is not their personal play toy to do whatever they want.

I would have given him a warning about it. Not like he tried to put in a bigger HDD and threw away the old one with company info on it or anything.

What about content (not usage) of a personal laptop that is used for work, ie, on the network while at work. Any specific dangers there? IOW, never accessing questionable sites while at work (which should be obvious) but is my celeb upskirt pic collection discoverable if it isn't in a shared folder?

If you're connected to the work network, the admins can probably see any file on your laptop. If you don't have a software firewall blocking CIFS, it's just a matter of opening \\(computername)\C$ in Windows Explorer.

I'd say the only danger is of your porn collection getting horded.

Not possible at our office. You can get a personal devise on the "Guest Wireless" but it is locked down to prevent connection to the corp network.

Since Ive got all the IT folks in one thread, any recs on a high power wireless router? Providing WiFi for about 10k sq feet inside a warehouse type building - two networks, one secured and one open for guests.

I was thinking about using the high end Asus and attaching a directional paddle antenna and seeing how far it could go.

He would ignore and forget about a warning within a month. He'll be bitching about probation for years any time the thought of replacing something himself comes up.

Get a few long range Ubiquiti Unifi AP's. They're $90 a piece and can be centrally controlled with the admin software that comes with them.

I had a user once with a "broken monitor". It wasn't plugged in.

I actually worked in IT at our university. We had to go to the extension locations and flash windows 7. When I got to each location, it was a panic to delete or move stuff they didn't want me to see. The number 1 request I got from each person was to keep their Itunes and pictures.

I saw napster on one of them. I turned and gave them a head shake in disappointment.

I'm wondering how bad it has to be to lose such a high level job.

Same here except they are stored off site. Also, anytime a tape/tapes are picked up out of normal rotation an email is sent to everyone on the list letting them know.

I was "the system." The only time anyone that wasn't me picked up a tape was when I was out of the office. This shouldn't be the case with any larger group (we were under 100 employees, "IT" was 1FTE, 1-2PTE). No documentation of tapes were kept outside of the labels on the tape in terms of rotation. The server was off-site, but the tapes were on-site (maybe a mile between the two). It wouldn't been easy to do over a month's time. If I knew I was two days away from being fired, I maybe could've done it, but I still think physically destroying the tapes would've been a challenge without a long-term malicious plan.
