Let's say I clicked on something. Now all I have is a message that says my computer is infected with viruses and all of my files are encrypted, but for a fee, they'll fix it. Can y'all fix it?

a CCNA is not something I would considered required for InfoSec

go to bleeping computer and look up their ransomware hijack removal guide. youll need a flash drive and clean computer so you can download a couple of programs.

short answer is hitman pro kickstarter + malwarebytes.

true but it REALLY helps you get into networking, and i dont know many infosec guys that didnt start by getting their feet wet with networking.

if the IT department is actively looking to bust people then it's probably a shitty place to work.

What we prefer to do is to mitigate risk with OpenVAS, monitor for spikes or unusual activity, plug holes, firewalls, antivirus, security policies, APPLOCKER/group policy, and most importantly.. have a rock solid backup and DR setup.

Ubiquiti UniFi is good. If you have the money Xirrus Arrays are better and support a higher number of users if you have the need for that.

I work with about 20 other pretty highly skill info sec peeps and 1 of them has a current ccna.

I agree, a good infosec person should have a very good understanding of networking cencepts. But you dont need to know IPv6 subnetting, etc that the current CCNA focuses on

Only doesn't save cookies/history to your local machine. Doesn't affect network traffic in any way.

Alerts me that you are into some shady shite...

So how do I go about streaming Netflix or something on my tablet using the company's wifi? I need something to supplement my work in the background. Teach me magic.

It's amazing how many links I click on within TRant that lead to sites blocked by our IT. No porn, gambling or gaming going on in my company..

When I was working Helpdesk for in ISP I had a call from the secretary at a high school some sort of trouble she believed was related to her connectivity (it's been over a decade, memory is fuzzy). I was trying to walk her through getting into the My Computer properties and it was going slow. If I had her left-click on something, the mouse and computer acted fine but if I had her-right-click nothing happened.

Finally I decided to get as basic as possible. I had her look at her mouse, look at how her pointer and middle fingers were each on separate buttons so when I was saying "right-click" that means "click one time with the button under your middle finger".

Her response: "Ohhhhhhh! Whenever you said 'right-click' I was writing down the word 'click'."

I once was re-imaging a guy's laptop, his laptop had been in for malware about 3-4 times in a 6-month period so I decided to do a little digging. He had dl'd an assload of music (probably on his home wireless) and a little gem of a video named "Black Hookers 1998". That was the last time I had to re-image his laptop.

As to the wifi question: we have a lot of outdoor sites and mesh Tropos units together with Cisco 2800's splitting the WAN and LAN signals for customers and employees. They have a radius of a bit over 4km each (pushing 4 watts).

New Tropos units are pricey ($4k range) but we found some really nice used ones for ~$275/unit from someone out in Cali who had them just taking up space after upgrading to brand new units.

I don't know if this is a grammar issue or a legit question.

If grammar issue, thats the littlest care I could give.

If legit, yes my work building (place where I work) houses only our company (that I work for).
