We've had a 4-runner for 18 years now and never a problem.

Our Explorer is a limited. It has every option Ford offers for the Explorer. In order for us to get the same in the others we were looking upper 40's low 50's new and high 30's used. We bought our limited with 30k miles for 26k.
Yeah I get the whole front wheel drive thing, but ask yourself honestly how often do you need a "real" suv? The front wheel drive has never been an issue.
If it ever is, I have a truck and we can handle it.

Our 06 GC has transmission problems. Also electrical issues.. It is a piece of shite and I won't buy another one. OP should get the 4 runner. It's also really small if you have a family.
I bought an '06 GC with 13k miles in '06. Almost 9 years and 147k miles later, I've replaced a water pump, tires, batteries and brake pads (at 135k). My MIL still drives it. The A/C will need some work this spring- there's been a slow freon leak for about a year now that's gotten progressively worse, but that's the biggest problem I've had with it. I haven't even had to change light bulbs. Jeeps have come a long way since 'transmission problems and low trade-in value.'

I would not buy a JGC older than a '2014. I have a 2015 Overland and love it so far. Good friend's wife just bought a new 4Runner and it is nice also, but they are too different to really compare against each other.
My mom had a 95. My sister ended up driving it in college. Then mom got a 2000. Dad ends up driving it and in 2004 he gave it to me for my Dodge Ram 1500. He wanted a truck for a 3rd vehicle. Then I got the 2005 in late 2006. I test drove a new one in 2012 before I bought my wrangler. I just couldn't justify spending close to 40k for an SUV. I got my 2004 wrangler for 15k. I'll probably never get rid of it. Only has 50k on it now. Those inline 6 motors will run a long time.

I just reall really really dislike fwd. plus, I can pull my boat with my truck, or the 4Runner should we take it to the camp.
It's more of me hating fwd than anything tho.

As far as reliability, most of today's vehicles are on par with another.
I suggest looking at options of all suvs in that class. Comparing prices, then driving them. You like what you like.

4Runners looked so much better before Toyota turned them into a soccer mom vehicle

It's more of an all wheel drive system.

Yeah I'm with you on fwd. But it's a 4 door family wagon and it's literally never noticed.
The one complaint I have is also me hating fwd, it has some torque steer that takes getting used to. I mean after a few minutes driving it you don't notice but the first time you get into it you will.
It's got a lot of hp for a big fwd vehicle.

We had a CRV that was decked out, but I hated driving it. Felt like driving a fat car.
Like a lot of guys, I've only owned trucks, so that's what I like to drive.

I have this problem with my wife's Santa Fe. Even at Hwy speeds the wheel can get jerky when you need to drop the hammer.

I bought a 2015 4Runner Trail Edition a few months ago. I've been wanting one for as long as I can remember, and I couldn't be happier with it.
Soccer mom vehicle? Please. Get out of here with that crap.

The silver pieces on the front and rear bumpers, are they removable?
Posted on 2/12/15 at 11:00 pm to CaptainsWafer
Gotta remove the entire bumper I believe. I like the silver parts though.

I don't want to tell you your business, but if you're driving the whole tribe cross country, the family truckster is the way to go

I bought a JGC about 6 months ago and love it. Also looked at 4 Runners, but didn't care for the looks of it. That's just a personal preference thing, you can't go wrong with either.

I really liked the old 4Runners but I think the new body style is one of the ugliest cars on the road. That front end.
