I feel for you - it can be a miserable experience.

A good friend of mine is going through this right now. He is about 3 weeks in and still in a great deal of pain.

I feel bad for him - it has really slowed him down and taken all of his energy. He ha been to the doctor 3 times to try to get more meds for pain and for the virus.

So sorry. Hope it's not too bad. I had a patient who had shingles on side of her face and into her ear canal.

I didn't realize how crazy I was from the pain until it was over with and I was looking back. I would sit in a hot tub of water for 8 hours at a time. Six weeks of hell.

Sister just got over them. She said it was the most painful thing she has ever had. Took almost three weeks. Good luck

You are in for a long ride, probably a month. I had them around my waist, couldn't wear anything but sweats. I was able to work each day, but it hurt with every movement.

good luck.

I am glad I got the vaccine. I would not enjoy this experience.

OP, do not go around any very young kids that hasn't had the shots for chicken pox. If you do, that child will come down with them. Know someone that did this to his grandchild.

I had them at 31. I noticed 5 or 6 rashes on my back itched. I went to the derm thinking it was poison ivy and to get a shot. He said it's shingles. Prescribed me anti virals. I didn't fill the script. They went away after a couple of weeks and I never felt a thing other than a couples days of itching. It was not bad at all.

It is from my back left side to my belly button. Only 2 small areas though. Its not like a huge band or "belt". One area that is about the size of a quarter and another about the size of a silver dollar.

You'll probably feeling some tingling and stinging as the 2 spots spread toward each other. Taking the anti-viral when you first noticed it will help a lot. I did have numbness in the area for several months after but mine was gone in 4 days. My MIL battled it for 3 months.

How did this Thread make it to 4 pages and no one has said:

Shingles are trashy.

The OT is falling apart.

I got shingles in my 20s and frankly, it really wasn't that bad. Age has an incredible impact on how severe your symptoms are.

I am not some badass dude with a high pain tolerance either. my pain was something like a fairly bad sunburn for 2 or so weeks.

"Shingles" is a remnant of the herpes virus "chicken pox" that lives in the dorsal root ganglia on one side of the spinal cord (which is why it only expresses itself on one side of the body and in a pattern tracing of the nerve distal to that dorsal root).

I had shingles about 5 years ago. I still have nerve very minor nerve damage in my chest and back where the rash initially appeared.

In older people there is a condition called "post herpatic neuralgia" where even when the shingles objective signs are gone, the patient continues to feel symptomatic pains where the shingles outbreak occurred.

A week after the flood I was helping my mom clear out her home when I noticed a rash on my left shoulder. The next day it was itching like crazy so I went to the doctor. It was shingles and the doctor put me on prednisone. It really didn't hurt that bad as long as I wore a sleeveless shirt. It itched like crazy for about a week. To this day if I get stressed the area where I had it starts itching. For me it wasn't painful, just itched.

I got them at age 13 and it was misery for about 2-3 weeks. I had them on by back and stomach. At first I didn't know if it was chiggers or poison ivy. Haven't had a flare up since then luckily.

I was terrified that mine would move up to my face. Went up my left arm and stopped at my neck.
