I was 52 when Katrina hit and 70 now. Haven't much cared about Mardi Gras long before Katrina hit, so I don't have any fond memories of Mardi Gras 06.

Was working at Woman's Hospital in BR. Crazy time but we saved something like 27 babies from a hospital NICU in NOLA. Staff was phenomenal, everyone just chipped in and helped. I actually got to drive a van with some preemie triplets to another hospital. Really cool.

I was in charge of telecommunications and it was a mess. Everyone driving around BR on their cell phones.

I remember one of the Mom's got separated from her 5 year old and he was sent on to Dallas. One of the unit secretaries drove to Dallas on her own to get the kid and bring him back. Just some really great people that worked there.

Our house in Kenner had severe roof damage (most of the shingles and backing were gone) which allowed water to pour in. It must have been a twister as no one in our area had that kind of damage. It was a complete rebuild with us being out of the house for 7 months. We lost almost all of our furniture also. We were fortunate as we were able to live with my wife's sister in Metairie for ONLY 7 months while State Farm paid for a contractor to completely rebuild the inside of the house. They also paid us very well for our contents. The rebuild could have taken much longer for sure and we got a new house and new contents. We didn't realize fully at the time how truly lucky we were but we did shortly after.
I will always remember the feeling of opening the front door when we returned to the house after being evacuated-shocking is putting it mildly. My wife lost it, then I did too.

Ida tore my life apart… a bad bitch. But I was in a different location. Katrina was really strong and lucky it decreased before
Landfall.

Mississippi was absolutely destroyed by Katrina. But New Orleans received all the media attention because it is a bigger city. If the levees were built properly, the damage to New Orleans would have been minimal. Mississippi and Alabama would have received more coverage.

Also I 've been told by some of my elderly friends that Betsy was just as bad for new orleans.
Yep, Betsy actually hit NOLA head on and came right up the river to BR. I remember the eye going over our house.

The eye came in right over Pearlington. We were in Pass Christian in June for a party. The place we stayed was completely gone.

Yeah, it had nothing to do with the 1,800 people that died

Were the babies from Memorial or Charity? I saw movies/documentaries on those hospitals and those working there are true heroes. Getting those people out, carrying patients and equipment and one mistake could cost a life. They tired to prosecute a doctor at Memorial for murder or something. I’m glad she wasn’t found guilty. If I were adm I’d tell people to come get your relatives, we are closing, and sent my staff home. They don’t deserve this.

What was the reason they died? Did you not read what I said? If the levees would have held, New Orleans would not have flooded. That was the reason for the many deaths. I know why there was coverage.

Mississippi and Alabama had their fair share of damage and deaths but the national media barely covered it. When people talk about remembering Katrina the focus is mostly on New Orleans. Not Mississippi or Alabama or other gulf states.

What does the media talk about most when talking about 911?

The Pentagon?
Rural Pennsylvania?
Twin Towers?
