frick it, let's just turn this into a MM thread....
Eating snowflakes with plastic forks and a paper plate.
(See it's not just midlife, childhood can be tragic and meaningless too)

Life is too short to worry about it ending. Just be glad for the time you have and enjoy as much of it as you can. It can be over a lot sooner than you expect.

Easy for you to say, not all of us get one of these

see, once one realizes that the universe works on a math equation that never even ever really even ends in the end, one must face eternal meaninglessness, or come to the conclusion that you make your own meaning, and should spend one's time wisely. (to stay on both topics)
bonus life tip: think about pavement to avoid premature ejaculation
eta: that one up

My kids starting to leave home is really depressing for me. I have two in college and cried like a baby the day they left. A lot of people say "cant wait to get the kids out the house". For me, its just the opposite.

My first born will be leaving home in a little under 3 years. I'm still scratching my head wondering where the last 15 years have gone.
Thankfully his little sister is 8 and has no intention of as she says "living anywhere else besides with my daddy".

Interesting article that got me thinking the other day:
LINK
(Boston Globe article on loneliness in middle-aged men)
Seems like this would be a good spot to park it.
And to continue with the Modest Mouse lyrics:
And it's hard to be a human being
And it's harder as anything else
And I'm lonesome when you're around
And I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself
And I miss you when you're around

I'm in my mid 30s now. Sometimes I feel old. Sometimes I don't. I do have my moments. Like last night I was lying in bed and thought about how in just 15 years, I'm going to be 50. I guess that 30s and 40s era is a weird time. You have people younger that think you're washed up, and people older than you that tell you how young you are. Idk. And then to top it off, being single. You have women from 18-45 hitting on you.

My favorite is Life Lessons by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler.
But you are right. If I had turned inward instead of running, I'd be in a much better place.

Child support is almost over and myself and the gf like to travel so that's how I will spend my time in the future. I don't have the answer on how to stop life from passing you by but I live one day at a time and enjoy each day. We are not guaranteed anything so

All good stuff, but please rephrase your answer in the form of modest mouse lyrics for full credit.

Oh, hell no.
Both of mine graduate in May. My son has a job already and will stay with us for a month or so until he gets an apartment up here.
My daughter will have earned her masters degree and already has a job with Fairfax County schools and will be getting an apartment of her own.
I can't wait to be an empty nester and begin the next phase of my life.

I think freedom, idle time and/or boredom makes time go by slower, hence days of college and youth seemed to last so long compared to nowadays.
