How are the police to know this?
Wut.
Do you even know what a pellet gun is\looks like or are you just speaking freely from a place of ignorance?

What I don't understand is how the cops are able to exercise restraint and talk the guy down in a situation where it seems like they would be justified in shooting, but if you're holding a cellphone or you're a 12-year old with a pellet gun its "shoot first and ask questions later." Better cop training?

You can't be serious.
They should have obliged that nice young man and put two in his chest and one in his dome

Originally thought this occurred at night, as the perp seemed to be drunk. Figured it would be hard to know difference between pellet gun and rifle in the dark.

Ah another bootlicker whose dad never gave him a pellet gun as a young man

My pellet gun doesn't look like something we use to run around with as kids and I'm pretty sure a little piece of metal moving at 1200 fps could kill you if hit in the right spot.

Using verbal commands, the officers persuaded Parker to set down the weapon, Coppola said.
I hope they weren't yelling at him. if they were they should be put on leave.

this happened quite close to where I grew up. Things have gotten even worse apparently.
glad the cops weren't hurt.

when someone points a rifle at the police, the response should be pew-pew-pew and not harsh words.
I am a little sad they didn't kill him though.

The fact is it was a pellet gun and that was apparent to the cops, as it would be for any adult with a functioning brain. I dont want to hear fabricated anecdotes about how you totes have a pellet gun that looks exactly like an AK, that was not the case here. I applaud the officers for their restraint.

if i'm the cop, and my family's future is riding on whether this guy fires the weapon he is pointing at me, i'm afraid he's not going to make it.

You're pretty sheltered aren't you?
These are pellet guns. You point this at me and you're not going to make it to the hospital.

You do realize this does not make two shits of a difference, right?
Not only is there no way for the cops to have known that at the time, but also, if anyone is stupid enough to point a weapon at another human (especially in a threatening manner at a cop) they deserve to be dealt with, however that may be.

ManBearTiger does win the online badass of the night award.

Not sure of the circumstances but I would probably have no problem with him being dead. The first guy I've ever shot was on less than that. He was reaching for what I presumed was a gun and I made the choice as well as him. I know cops frick up and some are bad power hungry and everything else but when shite gets real guess what it's fricking real. Most people don't wake up wanting to kill someone but there are exceptions and they should be dealt with. I just hate that we have to dissect everything that hits the media.

Sorry I was on a rant and I served with some good guys and our reputation was ruined by a select few. Google 1st battalion 41st infantry battalion murders sting proud battalion. I was a 19 delta not infantry but it still hurt I was a part of this battalion and a select few fricking idiots hurt our reputation

I upvoted the officers. You deserve a down vote.
