Which probably means she's getting 100% for 5 weeks and 60% for the next 3 assuming 2 weeks vacation and 8 weeks STD. Not to shabby
How do you figure?

My wife is due any second now

She currently has 80 hours PTO saved up

This is how it works

Normal STD is 6 weeks at 60% for vaginal delivery, however, the first two weeks is unpaid except for PTO

So it goes like this

First two weeks, she gets 100% of pay while draining her 80 hour PTO bank

Next 4 weeks she gets 60% of pay

After that, it is unpaid for 6 weeks

Why should I as an employer pay for someone to have children?

I hope you're not an employer actually. If you are, I bet your employees really love you. Have some compassion bub

If a business wants to do that, that's their prerogative.

Just don't have some monolithic government make it mandatory. That's fricked up.

60% STD and 40% vacation. That is fairly standard. Spread the vacation out to fill in the gap for 5 weeks.
No. Standard is the first two weeks STD is unpaid, requiring the draining of vacation. You are off slack

that's awesome man, I'm happy for you! You know someone is going to be a good parent when they are that excited and tried for so long. frick yea.

I'm getting married in September and we will probably wait a few years before trying. My fiance went back to school, so the thought of having a baby scares the hell out of her. But she could tell me today that she were pregnant and I'd be ecstatic.

Compassion and business are like oil and water. Business has no feelings, sympathy or emotion. You want to be paid, work.

I'll have to say I'm surprised and glad to see the generally positive outlook on maternity leave in this thread. Yeah, you had your stupid comments but overall it seems that most people here support paid maternity leave. I'm shocked.

But if your balance sheet forces you to make mothers use their vacation and STD time, you're going to have a hard time retaining women employees.

Yeah it just depends on the field. If you provide STD and 2 weeks vacation you're going to be competitive with your benefits. No one is suggesting that is the greatest benefit in the world by any means, but as this thread has proved, that is above average with respect to maternity leave benefits. There are plenty of women who would love that benefit, and that is all that really matters when competing for employees.

That isn't true at all.

Business competes for the best and brightest employees. To compete, you have to have compassionate benefits to help attract the best. If you don't attract the best to work for you, then your business suffers.

No one has suggested this. Minimum requirements just to keep shite companies from fricking over employees? Yes. Mandatory 100%? nah, you don't have to do that. There are other workarounds.

But there are women in this country who are back at work within 2 weeks, which is absurd. Some hiring managers could benefit from taking a college level Anatomy and Physiology course.

I'm just willing to bet that there is an age gap when it comes to opinions like the oil and water one.

gets 12 weeks off, 100% pay. Seems very reasonable to me. Is this more or less than the standard in today's business climate?

Nope. My sister got 12 weeks off but only 60% of her pay.
I work for the state and don't get a set "maternity" leave, have to use annual and sick leave.
But I earn a pretty good bit of leave per month (I think) and not planning kids for at least a couple of years.

Standard

Perhaps I should have said fairly common, not standard. Not all STD policies have a 14 day elimination period, and many have none.

Regardless, the pay is the same. Either two weeks 100% and 8 weeks 60% or 5 weeks 100% and 3 weeks 60%, assuming 8 weeks STD.

Even companies like Wal-Mart are starting to see the writing on the walls. Behind most every defunct organization were some really bad employee policies.

Most of us nurses at work have STD that will help cover some of maternity leave (my plan pays 60% after I miss a week of work). We also have something called ELB time (extended leave bank)....we can ONLY use our ELB time for FMLA approved situations. I've been at my job 9 years so have like 330 hours of ELB time in my bank. However....they will use up any regular PL time first before they start using ELB time.

Either way....between ELB, PL, and STD I'm taking a full 12 weeks off and will be paid 100% for it if I have a baby.

Congrats to you as well.
As of today, my wedding was the happiest day of my life. That may change in 5 months.

Tomorrow is actually our 5th anniversary. We agreed, or so I thought, when we got married that we'd wait at least 5 years to pay off debt before we took on the financial burden of a child. Well, 2 years into marriage the wife starts stressing the frick out all of the time, but she wouldn't tell me why. Finally she breaks down and tells me that she's wanted a baby since the day she met me and that she can't wait any longer. So I said frick it and we started trying. Fast forward 3 years and we're pregnant and all of our debt, with the exception of the mortgage, will be paid off before the baby arrives. Needless to say, things tend to work themselves out

First, assuming 8 weeks is incorrect. Vaginal is 6 weeks, and c-section is 8. And yes, almost all policies have a waiting period

But you also want to run and good and honest business which is directly a result of the people that you employ. Eventually you'll run off the good employees and you'll be stuck with scraps with an attitude like that.
