they damn sure weren’t making that when I was a diesel mechanic.
I'm guessing the 200k is the usual OT hyperbole of max overtime and getting 1099'd. Not a bad income, but not a great way to make a career over 40 years.

That would triple the amount of the car.

Requiring entry level employees to supply their own expensive, specialized equipment is certainly a choice.
Pretty much every other job in the world provides the minimum necessary tools. Why this one gets an exemption is crazy. Training can also cost extra.

Someone else mentioned a stipend. Working with tools like that a lot, it’s very easy to misplace and misuse them. I could see a stipend to provide their own tools making sense to force responsibility.
Dealerships are also charging $150/ hr or at least the Dodge dealer did to me last time I was there. Seems absurd if guys are starting under $20/ hr and billing $150 on site.

Having to buy basic tools is standard. However, when Ford/GM start manufacturing goofy parts, fasteners and fittings, it should be on them and not the mechanic. What are you going to do with specialized Ford tools if you move to a Toyota dealership?

Thats amazing. Unfortunately Ford doesn't have a history of being innovative or anything so don't expect them to implement something like this to try and help solve the mechanic shortage. They are much better off just complaining about the situation and hopefully getting some HB1's.
